LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 47th-ranked Arizona men's tennis team was defeated by No. 1-ranked UCLA Saturday, 7-0, in Los Angeles, Calif. Arizona falls to 5-3 while UCLA improves to 8-0 on the year.
The duo of freshman Roger Matalonga and sophomore Colin O'Grady extended its doubles win streak to seven by defeating Erfan Djahangiri and Chris Surapol, 8-4. Junior Carl Hagman and sophomore Paul Warkentin fell in the No. 1 doubles position, 8-2, to Rodrigo Grilli and Marcin Matkowski. Playing No. 2 doubles were junior Whi Kim and freshman Daniel Andrus. The pair fell to the No. 39-ranked team of Tobias Clemens and Lassi Ketola, 8-2.
In singles play, the Bruins only needed two sets in each match to defeat their Wildcat opponents. Matalonga suffered his first singles loss as a Wildcat to the No. 40-ranked Chris Lam, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 6 position. With the loss, he falls to 7-1. Kim fell to Tobias Clemens on court one, 6-2, 7-5. Carl Hagman lost to Marcin Matkowski 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 2 position. Rodrigo Grilli defeated O'Grady, 7-5, 6-3, in the No. 3 slot. Playing No. 4 for the Wildcats, Warkentin fell to Erfan Djahangiri, 6-3, 6-4. Lassi Ketola beat Daniel Andrus, 6-3, 6-2, on court five.
The Wildcats will face intra-state rival Arizona State, on Friday, Feb. 28, in Tempe Ariz. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m.
