TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona men's tennis team fell to intra-state rival Arizona State Friday, 4-3. Arizona lost the doubles point and split the singles matches. Arizona drops to 5-4 on the season, while Arizona State improves to 4-4.
In doubles competition, sophomore Colin O'Grady and freshman Roger Matalonga defeated Chris Letcher and Clint Letcher on court two. O'Grady and Matalonga fought back from a 4-1 deficit, winning seven of the next nine points to earn the victory, 8-6. The win raises the pair's win streak to eight matches.
Junior Carl Hagman and freshman Daniel Andrus fell to Pim Van Mele and Ryan McBride, 8-6, in the No. 3 position tying the doubles competition, 1-1. On court one, the duo of Junior Whi Kim and sophomore Paul Warkentin battled the No. 43-ranked doubles team of Chris Stewart and Oliver Charroin, losing, 9-8 (5). The victory earned Arizona State the doubles point.
In singles competition, Arizona State came out quickly and won the first two matches to take an early 3-0 lead. O'Grady fell to Chris Stewart, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 3 position. Arizona State's Pim Van Mele defeated Hagman, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 2 slot.
The Wildcats won the next three matches to tie the match at 3-3. Warkentin defeated Olivier Charroin, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 4 spot. On court five, Matalonga defeated Chris Letcher, 6-4, 6-2, to improve his singles record to 8-1. Kim played an emotional match against Clint Letcher, to tie the match and keep the Wildcats in contention and won, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
All eyes were on court six where Andrus was matched against Ryan McBride. Andrus lost the first set, 6-3, then rallied to tie the match by winning the second set, 6-4, but was unable to close the match, as McBride edged Andrus in the final set, 6-4.
Arizona will next be in action, when they host the Stanford Cardinal, Friday, March 3. The match is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
