TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 40 Arizona men's tennis falls short in its quest to upset No. 28 USC Saturday, 4-3. Arizona lost the doubles point and only won three singles matches. The loss drops Arizona's record to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-10, while the win raises USC's record to 11-6 overall and 1-2 in the Pac-10.
In doubles action, the Trojans swept the three matches, earning the doubles point. Sophomore Colin O'Grady and freshmen Roger Matalonga fell to Daniel Langre and Parker Collins in the No. 2 position, 9-7. Clinching the doubles point for the Trojans, USC's Parkash Armitraj and Jeff Kazarian defeated junior Whi Kim and sophomore Paul Warkentin on court one, 9-7. On court three, junior Carl Hagman and freshman Daniel Andrus fell to Johan Berg and Ruben Torres, 8-4.
After losing the doubles point, the Wildcats battled back, winning in the No. 5 and 6 positions to take the lead 2-1. On court five, O'Grady defeated Parker Collins, 6-3, 6-1. Andrus defeated Scott Patterson in the No. 6 slot, 6-0, 6-2. USC's Daniel Langre tied the match by defeating Warkentin in the No. 3 position, 6-4, 6-1. Prakash Amitraj took the lead for USC by defeating Kim on court one, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Hagman won an emotional match on court two, defeating Johan Berg in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. Winning the match for USC was Ruben Torres as he defeated Matalonga in three sets, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Arizona will be in action next as it hosts Northern Arizona on Wednesday, April 2 at the LaNelle Robson Center. The action is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
