TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 37 Arizona men's tennis team (1-0) opened the 2004 dual match season by easily defeated Northern Arizona (0-1), 7-0, Monday, Jan. 19. The Wildcats swept all three doubles matches as well as winning each singles match.
In the doubles matches, first to finish and playing on court three were senior Tom Lloyd and sophomore Tim Mullane. The duo defeated Ronson Taylor and James Heck, 8-0. Clinching the doubles point on court two, the pair of junior Colin O'Grady and sophomore Roger Matalonga defeated Jonas Jegers and Jeremy Coll, 8-3. Competing in the No. 1 position, sophomore Daniel Andrus and junior Paul Warkentin beat Thibault Schram and Lew DeLeon, 8-5.
Competing for Arizona on Court six, Mullane once again was the first Wildcat to finish as he cruised past Brian Grooms, 6-0, 6-1. Matalonga finished shortly after on court five, defeating Ronson Taylor, 6-1, 6-1. Warkentin clinched the match on court four beating Jonas Jegers, 6-1, 6-4. Andrus also only lost five games to Lew DeLeon in the No. 3 position, winning, 6-4, 6-1. O'Grady won in straight tiebreaker sets to Jeremy Coll in the No. 2 slot, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2). In the top position, No. 84 Lloyd defeated Thibault Schram, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-2.
The Wildcats will hit the courts again Friday, Jan. 30 in Houston, Texas, against Rice University. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
