No. 2 UCLA Edges Arizona Men's Tennis, 4-3

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 38 Arizona men's tennis team fell to the No. 2 UCLA Bruins, 4-3, Saturday, Feb. 21. Arizona won the doubles point for the eighth time this year, but only managed to win two singles matches. The loss drops Arizona 6-3 overall, while UCLA improves to 9-2.

In doubles action, Arizona won the doubles point for the eighth time this season, winning on courts two and three. The pair of junior Colin O'Grady and sophomore Roger Matalonga remains undefeated this spring in doubles competition as they defeated the No. 23-ranked team of Chris Lam and Tobias Clemens, 8-5. On court three, sophomore Tim Mullane filled in for the injured senior Tom Lloyd and with senior Whi Kim. The pair slipped by UCLA's duo of Chris Surapol and Philipp Gruendler, 9-8 (5). Fighting an illness, sophomore Daniel Andrus paired with junior Paul Warkentin and fell to the No. 36-ranked tandem of Alberto Francis and Kris Kwinta, 9-8 (3), on court one.

In singles, UCLA won the first three matches earning the Bruins a 3-1 lead. Warkentin fell to No. 90 Francis, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 4 position. Mullane made his second consecutive appearance this weekend facing Gruendler on court five. Mullane lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Nate Cochrane competed in his first dual match as a Wildcat, falling to Surapol in the No. 6 position, 6-4, 6-4.

Winning on courts two and three, Arizona tied the match 3 all. Matalonga continued his dominate performance this spring by beating No. 18 Lam in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-2. O'Grady also notched a straight set win over his ranked opponent, No. 79T Kwinta, 6-3, 6-4.

The No. 12-ranked Clemens proved too much for Kim on court one and clinched the match for UCLA. Kim fell in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.

Arizona will hit the courts again against California, Thursday, Feb. 26, in Berkeley, Calif. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
