BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 42 Arizona men's tennis team upset No. 20 California, Saturday, Feb. 28, in Berkeley, Calif. Arizona won three of the six singles matches, which forced doubles play, where Arizona swept all three matches. Arizona improves to 7-4 with the victory, while California falls to 3-5 with the loss.
Due to the rainout on Thursday, Arizona traveled back to Berkeley, to face the Golden Bears on Saturday. Since the California women's team had a match scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Arizona was forced to start the match with singles play at 9:30 a.m.
In singles No. 66 sophomore Roger Matalonga fell for the second time this Pac-10 season, when he was the first Wildcat off the courts after his loss to Balazs Veress on court two, 6-3, 6-4. Once again filling in for the Wildcats, sophomore Tim Mullane competed in the No. 6 slot. Mullane fell to Jacob Leivent, 6-3, 6-4.
Down 2-0, Arizona earned its first victory when sophomore Daniel Andrus dropped Tyler Brown, 7-5, 6-1, in the No. 4 slot. Senior Whi Kim lost in the No. 1 position to No. 41 Wayne Wong, to give Cal the 3-1 lead.
Needing wins on the last two courts to force the doubles point, juniors Colin O'Grady and Paul Warkentin battled and each earned third set victories. O'Grady beat Daniel Sabescen on court three, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, while Warkentin defeated Patrick Briaud, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, forcing the doubles matches.
Needing the doubles point to upset the Golden Bears, Arizona swept all three matches, winning the match 4-3.
On court one the No. 23-ranked team of O'Grady and Matalonga defeated Briaud and Veress, 8-6. On court two the team of Andrus and Warkentin returned to the winning column with their win over Browne and Sebescen, 8-6. Completing the sweep of the doubles point were Kim and Mullane who teamed up for the second time and remained undefeated with their win over Leivent and Wong, 8-5.
Arizona will be in action again Sunday, March 7, when they host the San Diego. First serve at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center will be at 1:30 p.m.
