Wildcats Drop Pac-10 Opener

BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 32 Arizona men's tennis team dropped their conference opener to the No. 16-ranked California Golden Bears 6-1, Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.  The Cats (11-6, 0-1) dropped the doubles point and were defeated in five of their six singles matches.

"We played a good match today," said assistant coach Tom Lloyd.  "Good teams don't give you too many opportunities and when we got them, we didn't take advantage."

In doubles action, the Golden Bears (10-4, 1-0) took the early lead, picking up wins in all three doubles matches.  In the No. 2 slot, No. 24-ranked duo of Nick Andrews and partner Christoffer Konigsfeldt topped Geoff Embry and Ravid Hazi 8-3.  The Bears secured the doubles point on court one after No. 20-ranked pair of Jonathan Dahan and Pedro Zerbini defeated Arizona's No. 55-ranked duo of Borja Malo and Pat Metham 8-4.  The Wildcats also fell on court three where Cal's pair of Bozhidar Katsarov and Riki McLachlan edged Andres Arango and Andres Carrasco 8-6.

In singles action, Cal's No. 14-ranked Zerbini topped Jay Goldman 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot and Riki McLachlan defeated Hazi 7-5, 6-3 on court five.  The Golden Bears led 3-0, when Andrews clinched the victory on court four to give Cal their fourth point to seal the victory. Andrews defeated sophomore Jason Zafiros 6-4, 7-6(5).  In other action, Arango battled No. 58-ranked Konigsfeldt in three sets on court two.  Konigsfeldt outlasted Arango 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to earn their fifth point.  Arizona's lone point of the match came in singles action on court three where junior Andres Carrasco edged No. 120-ranked Dahan 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10).  Moments later, Cal earned their sixth point in the No. 5 slot where Katsarov won a close match against Embry in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
