The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team opened the spring season today as they hosted the NAU Lumberjacks at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Match market the 27th meeting of the two schools in which the Cats had previously held the 25-1 advantage. Arizona topped NAU, 7-0, and now hold the 26-1 all time advantage.
The Wildcats claimed the doubles point, winning two matches. In singles action, the Cats won on all six courts, with two matches entering super-tiebreakers.
In doubles play, Fredrik Ask took on Shaun Waters and Robert Martin on court one. The teams traded wins to bring the match to two games all. The Arizona duo then began to pull ahead, winning four consecutive games to take the lead, 6-2. Waters and Martin battled back, winning the next five games, bringing the match to 7-6 in favor of NAU. Miccini and Ask came back with a win to tie the match at seven all and the court entered a tie breaker. The teams fought a battle of ties at 2, 3 and 4 all before the NAU team claimed two straight brining the tiebreaker to 6-4. Arizona answered with the next point but that would be their last as Waters and Martin clinched the tiebreaker and the match, 8-7 (5).
Finishing almost simultaneously were courts two and three where the Wildcats were able to secure wins to claim the doubles point.
On court two, Sumeet Shinde and Kieren Thompson teamed up to take on Patrick Schimmelbauer and Kester Black. The Wildcat duo came out strong, winning the first three games. Schimmelbauer and Black answered with the next win but Shinde and Thompson rebounded to clinch the next two. The NAU team battled back, winning three straight games to bring the match to 6-4. Those wins would be their last as Shinde and Thompson claimed the next two wins and the match, 8-4.
Andre Vidaller and Naoki Takeda battled Dominic Bermudez and Alan Barrios on court three. Arizona claimed the first game but Bermudez and Barrios came back to tie the match at one. Vidaller and Takeda answered by claiming the next three games and bringing the match to 4-1. The teams swapped wins, brining the match to 6-4 when NAU claimed two straight to tie the match at 6. Arizona answered with the next two wins to claim the match, 8-6, securing the doubles point for the Cats.
In singles action, Shinde was first to finish as he took on Barrios on court six. The Sophomore from Pune, India dominated the first set, winning 6-0. In the second set, Shinde claimed the first three games before Barrios answered with a win. The two traded wins, bringing the set to 5-3 when Shinde won one final game to claim the set, 6-3.
In his collegiate singles debut, Takeda took on Matin on court five. The freshman from Osoka, Japan dropped the first game but rebounded to win the next four. Martin claimed the next win but Takeda answered with the next two to clinch the set, 6-2. In the second set, Takeda came out strong, earning the first two games. Martin clinched the next game but it would be his last as Takeda won the set, 6-1.
In his debut as a Wildcat, Ask played Schimmelbauer on court two. The junior, a transfer from Wisconsin, won the first game and the two traded wins, bring the match to 3-2 in favor of Ask. Ask claimed the next three games to win the set, 6-2. In the second set, the Oslo, Norway native fell behind early but came back to tie the set at two all. Ask continued his run, winning the next two games and taking the 4-2 lead. The two traded wins with Ask remaining one step ahead at 5-4. Ask earned the next game to clinch the set, 6-4, and secure the victory for the Wildcats.
On court four, Thompson was next to finish in his match against Black. The two swapped wins in the first set, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of Thompson. The junior from Brisbane, Australia claimed the next three games and the set, 6-2. In the second set, Thompson claimed the first two games before Black answered with a win. Thompson dominated the rest of the set, claiming the next four straight to win, 6-1.
On court one, Vidaller and Water fought a long battle. The two traded wins as Vidaller fell behind, 2-1. Waters secured the next two wins to extend his lead to 4-1 when Vidaller answered with a win. That win would be his last as Waters claimed the set, 6-2. In the second set, the two swapped wins to bring the set to 3-2 in favor of Vidaller. The junior from Santos, Brazil claimed the next three games to win the set, 6-2. The court entered a super-tiebreaker and Vidaller and Waters battled it out tying the score several times. After a long fight Vidaller came out on top and clinched the match in a 16-14 tiebreaker.
Finishing last was Miccini on court three. The junior from Recanati, Italy dominated the first set against Bermudez. The two tied the score at one and two games each but Miccini pulled ahead to clinch the set, 6-2. In the second set, the two traded wins with Miccini remaining one step ahead with the set at 6-4. Bermudez fought back and claimed the next three wins to top Miccini, 7-5. The court entered a super-tiebreaker where Miccini held Bermudez to only six points to claim the tiebreaker and the match, 10-6.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 20 as they host the Nevada Wolf Pack at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
