The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team hosted the New Mexico State Aggies at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The teams waited out the rain, starting the match two and a half hours late. With the rain delay, the decision was made to begin the day with singles play.
Arizona clinched four matches to claim their third consecutive victory.
Finishing first was Fredirk Ask on court two. Ask won the first game over Mark Westgate who claimed the next game to tie it at one. Ask came back to win the next tow game before Westgate clinched another win. Ask dominated the next three games to win the set, 6-2. In the second set, the Oslo, Norway native took an early lead at 2-0 but Westgate answered with two straight wins to tie it at two. Ask came back to win the next four games, clinching the set and the match, 6-2.
Next to finish was Andre Vidaller as he took on Luis Ramirez on court one. The junior from Santos, Brazil claimed the first two games but Ramirez answered with the next three victories. The two traded wins to bring the match to 4-3 in favor of Ramirez. The next two games went to Ramirez as he edged Vidaller, 6-3. In the second set, Vidaller dropped the first game but rebounded to tie the set at one. The win would be his last as Ramirez clinched the next five games and the set, 6-1.
On court three, Giacomo Miccini was next to finish in his match against Daniel Fernandez. In the first set, Miccini was unable to secure a win as Fernandez clinched the set, 6-0. In the second set, Miccini fell behind 2-0 before clinching a win. Fernandez claimed the next three to, brining the match to 5-1. Miccini earned one more game to bring the match to 5-2 before Fernandez clinched the set, 6-2. With the loss the Cats fell behind 2-1 in the overall match.
Naoki Takeda was next to finish as he took on Paul Denele on court five. Takeda clinched the first two games before Denele secured a win. The freshman from Osoka, Japan clinched the next four games to claim the set, 6-1. In the second set, Takeda clinched the first game and the two traded wins to bring the set to 4-2 in Takeda's favor. Takeda then clinched the next two games to earn the set, 6-2. The win tied the overall match score to two points each.
On court six, Sumeet Shinde played Patrick Pfister. Shinde clinched the first game but Pfister answered with the next win to tie it at one. Shinde came back strong to win the next four games before allowing Pfister another win. The win would be his last as Shinde won the next two games to clinch the set, 6-2. In the second set, Shinde won the first three games before Pfister secured a win. The two traded victories before Shinde clinched two straight and clinched the set, 6-2. With the win the Cats took the overall lead at 3-2 but still needed one more victory to clinch.
On court four, Kieren Thompson battled Germain Degardin. Thompson clinched the first game but Degardin came back to tie the set at one. The two fought a battle of ties as the set tied at two and three. Thompson claimed the next three games to take the set, 6-3. In the second set, Thompson claimed two straight before Degardin secured a win. Thompson came back to win the next game but Degardin answered with the next win. With the set at 3-2 in Thompson's favor, the junior from Brisbane, Australia clinched the next three games to win the set, 6-2. The victory marked the fourth point for the Wildcats and clinched the match for Arizona.
With the victory Arizona improves to 3-0 and New Mexico State falls to 1-1.
The Cats will be back in action on Feb. 1 as they host St. Mary's at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m.
