TUCSON, Ariz. -
No. 33 Arizona (6-3) defeated Santa Clara (2-3), 6-1, at the Robson Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, recording its sixth home victory of the year.
"We're happy with another solid win at home," Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. "Santa Clara is a good team and we needed to play focused today, especially after coming off such a long match with Fresno State last night."
Every UA player posted a win in either doubles or singles play.
In singles, Arizona junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) upset No. 25 Katie Le, 6-2, 7-6 (8), at the No. 1 spot. Smyth gave the Wildcats the fifth point of the match and improved her individual record to 8-1. Smyth came into the match ranked No. 108.
At the No. 4 spot, UA junior Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also won her match in a tiebreaker against Stephanie Skaras, as James defeated Skaras, 4-6, 7-6(6).
Arizona picked up three more singles victories, all in straight sets.
"The girls did a great job at starting strong in every court," Maes said. "What I liked the most about the weekend was the way we played for every point."
UA freshman Shayne Austin (Oaks Park, Calif.) recorded the match's first singles victory over Maggie McGeorge, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 5 spot.
Arizona junior Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) brought the Wildcats a point closer to securing the win by sweeping Kelly Lamble 6-2, 6-1.
UA sophomore Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) clinched the match at the No. 3 spot as she swept Alex Zaniewski, 6-1, 6-1.
"Our two and three doubles spots played very efficiently," Maes said. "Their play got us the point quickly. This gave us a nice feeling going into the singles."
For the doubles point, Stubbe and Hendrikx gave the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage by defeating Lamble and McGeorge, 8-1, at the No. 2.
UA juniors Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) and James recorded their eighth doubles win of the season over Rouvillois and Skaras, 8-2, at the No. 3 spot.
"What I liked the most about the weekend was the way we played for every point," Maes said. "We have a tough schedule and we cannot count on beating teams playing good tennis alone. We also need to be able to rely on our heart out on the court, day in and day out."
Arizona will travel to Dallas, Texas for its third road trip of the season. The Wildcats take on TCU on Friday, Feb. 22 at noon and North Texas on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 11:00 a.m. CT.
