Cats Fall for First Time in 2013

The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team traveled to San Diego, Calif. to take on the No. 26-ranked San Diego Toreros at Hogan Tennis Center. For the first time this season, the Cats were edged, 4-3.

The Cats dropped the doubles point with losses on courts one and two. The team went on to win three singles matches but their efforts weren't enough to best the Toreros.

In doubles play, Fredrik Ask and Naoki Takeda played Romain Kalaydjian and Claran Fitzgerald on court one. The Arizona team was only able to secure two victories in the 8-2 loss.

On court two, Sumeet Shinde and Kieren Thompson teamed up to play Thibaut Visy and Uros Petronijevoc. Shinde and Thompson earned four games but were topped, 8-4.

With courts one and two decided, court three was left unfinished. Giacomo Miccini and Mario Urquidi battled Clarke Spinosa and Andrew Carlisle. The Cats were down 7-6 when the match was called.

In singles action, the Wildcats clinched three wins with Ask and Thompson claiming victories to remain undefeated in singles play.

On court one, Ask played No. 62-ranked Kalaydijan. The junior from Olso, Norway claimed a close first set, 7-6 (3) but Kalaydijan answered with the next set, 6-3. The court entered a third set where Ask held Kalaydijan to two games in a 6-2 win.

Vidaller took on Visy on court two. The Arizona junior fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. On court three, Miccini fought a close battle with Spinosa. Miccini dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to claim the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8). The match entered a third set where Miccini dominated play. The junior from Recanati, Italy clinched the set and match, 6-1.

Thompson played Petronijevoc on court four. The Arizona junior claimed the match in straight sets. The first set entered a tiebreaker where Thompson was victorious, 7-6 (11). In the second set, Thompson held Petronijevoc to three games to clinch a 6-3 win.

On court five, Takeda took on Victor Pugliese. The freshman from Osoka, Japan was topped, 6-4, 6-2.

Shinde battled Fitzgerald on court six. The sophomore from Pune, India dropped the first set, 6-3 but rebounded to win the second, 6-2. The court entered a third set where Shinde was topped, 6-0. The loss marked the first for Shinde in the 2013 season.

With the loss Arizona falls to 5-1 while San Diego improves to 4-2.

The Cats will be back in action on Feb. 16 as they travel to Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson to host New Mexico. The match is set to begin at noon with a BBQ beginning at 11:30.
