The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team fell in their third matches of Pac-12 play with a 7-0 loss to the USC Trojans on Friday. The Cats were unable to clinch a win in three doubles and six singles matches.
In doubles action, Matt Dunn and Mario Urquidi were first to finish in their match against Michael Grant and Eric Johnson on court two. The Wildcat duo was topped, 8-4. On court one, Fredrik Ask and Naoki Takeda and Kieren Thompson on court three. The Arizona duo fought a close match with Max de Vroome and Jonny Wang, forcing a tiebreaker, but were topped, 7-6 (5).
In singles play, Ask was first to finish in his match against Hanfmann on court two. Ask dropped the match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. On court three, Shinde wrapped up next in his match against Johnson. The sophomore from Pune, India fell, 6-1, 6-3. Carlos Bermudez played his second match of the season as he took on de Broome on court six. The two fought a close first set but Bermudez was topped, 7-5. In the second set, Bermudez clinched three games but was topped, 6-3. The loss marked the fourth point for the Trojans and clinched the match in their favor.
On court one, Thompson took on No. 9-ranked Sarmiento. The Brisbane, Australia native dropped the match, 6-2, 6-2. Earning Arizona's only set of the day was Urquidi on court four. The junior from El Paso, Texas, clinched a close first set over Wang, 6-4, but dropped the next two sets, 6-0, 6-0. Last to finish was Takeda on court five. The freshman from Osoka, Japan fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to Grant.
With the loss Arizona falls to 0-3 in Pac-12 play and 10-9 overall while the Trojans improves to 2-0 in Pac-12 play and 19-2 overall.
The Cats will be back in action on Saturday as they take on UCLA in Los Angeles. The teams are set to face off at 1 p.m.
