Cats Fall in Final Regular Season Match

Cats fall to No. 2 Bruins, 7-0

The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the No. 2-ranked UCLA Bruins. The teams faced off at Los Angeles Tennis center on Saturday.

In doubles play, the Cats fell in all three matches and the doubles point went to the Bruins. On court one, Fredrik Ask and Naoki Takeda and Matt Dunn and Mario Urquidi played Clay Thompson and Karue Sell. Dunn and Urquidi secured four wins but were unable to top C. Thompson and Sell, dropping the match, 8-4.

In singles action, the Cats dropped all six matches but were able to force three super-tiebreakers. Finishing first was Dunn on court six. The freshman from Tucson took on Brigham but dropped the match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. On court three, Shinde was next to finish in his match against C. Thompson. The sophomore from Pune, India fell, 6-2, 6-2. Finishing third was Ask on court two. The junior from Oslo, Norway dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Mkrchian. The loss marked the fourth point for the Bruins and clinched the match in their favor.

On court four, Urquidi wrapped up next in his match against Sell. Urquidi dropped the first set, 6-3, but bounced back to clinch the second, 6-4. The set marked the first win for the Wildcats on the day. The match entered a super-tiebreaker where Urquidi was able to secure only two points and Sell clinched the match, 10-2. Next to finish was the match on court five where Takeda took on Maxime Tabatruong. The freshman from Osoka, Japan fell 6-2 in the first set but rebounded to earn the second set, 6-2. The court entered a super-tiebreaker where Takeda fell, 10-4. Last to finish was K. Thompson on court one. K. Thompson dropped a close first set, 7-5, to No. 14-ranked Marcos Giron. K. Thompson, a junior from Brisbane, Australia, bounced back to earn the second set, 7-5, and force a super-tiebreaker. The two fought another close battle but K. Thompson dropped the match, 10-6.

With the loss, Arizona falls to 0-4 in Pac-12 play and 10-10 overall while UCLA improves to 18-1 and 4-0 in Pac-12 play.

The Cats will be back in action on Friday, April 12 as they travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to take on Stanford.
