Arizona Falls to Cal, 4-0

Tucson, Ariz. – Every match was close for the Cats, but none were able to put their opponents away on Friday as Arizona lost to the Golden Bears 4-0.

“We were competitive with those guys,” head coach Tad Berkowitz said. “This is one of the top teams in the conference and we hung with them.”

Cal took the doubles point early, as Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton defeated Naoki Takeda and Sumeet Shinde 8-3, while Will Kneale and Trevor James lost to Filip Bergevi and Mads Engsted 8-5.

In singles, James was the first to fall as Bayane took the match 6-4, 6-2.

Robin Chou came up short in his dual match debut for the Cats, losing 6-3, 6-3 to Mads Engsted. The match was clinched for Cal when Bergevi defeated Mario Urquidi 6-3, 7-5.

With the outcome determined, Takeda, Shinde, and Kneale all had their matches abandoned.

Arizona will take on Stanford Sunday, March 30 at 11 a.m. at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
