Cats Drop Close One to Huskies

Tucson, Ariz. – Arizona hung around, but was unable to close out Washington on Friday, as they fell to the Huskies 4-2 in Seattle.

“We came up a little short against a solid Washington team on the road,” head coach Tad Berkowitz said. “We are very close to getting over the hump.”

Washington took the early 1-0 lead after winning two out of three doubles matches. Sumeet Shinde and Naoki Takeda were the first to lose, falling 8-2 to Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke. The point was decided after Viktor Farkas and Max Manthou defeated Mario Urquidi and Matt Dunn 8-4. The match on court three with Kieren Thompson and Trevor James was abandoned at 6-3 in favor of Michael Chamerski and Wendell Watanabe.

The first point for the Wildcats was earned by Urquidi in singles, who defeated Hawke in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

Only moments later, Washington regained the lead, moving to 3-1 as Egger defeated Thompson 6-1, 6-2, and Chamerski defeated Robin Chou 6-2, 6-4

Takeda clawed Arizona back into the match, defeating Manthou 6-1, 6-4. The win moved him to a team best record 15-4 on the spring.

After dropping the first set 7-6 and being down 3-0 in the second, Will Kneale brought the set back to serve at 3-2. Unfortunately it was not enough as he fell to Farkas 7-6, 6-3.

Sumeet Shinde pushed to a third set, dropping the first 6- and winning the second 7-6, but the match was abandoned as Washington took the 4-2 victory.

Arizona will head to Eugene, Ore. for their next match, as they take on the No. 27 Ducks on Saturday, Apr. 5 at 1:30 p.m.
