Cats Sweep New Mexico State on Sunday, 7-0

TUCSON, Ariz.--- After battling weather delays all weekend, Arizona finally got what it was looking for, as the Wildcats earned a convincing 7-0 sweep over New Mexico State, Sunday afternoon at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

For Arizona (3-5), the win marked its third victory in its last four matches and its first dual match sweep of the season.

The Wildcats left no doubt in this one, as Shoki Kasahara and Matt Dunn teamed up to take down New Mexico State's (0-1) tandem of Cristofer Gonclaves and Germain Degardin, 8-4 on court three, before Sumeet Shinde and Naoki Takeda rallied to defeat Thomas Douglas and Liam Glodberg, 7-5, on court one to bring home the doubles point. Arizona has now secured the double point in back-to-back matches.

With Arizona leading already leading 1-0, the Cats wasted no time in extending their advantage, as Jason Jaruvang (9-8, 3-4 Dual) blew past Liam Goldbert, 6-1, 6-1, to spot the Cats a 2-0 lead and give them their third victory of the year from the No. 3 spot.

Naoki Takeda (13-3, 5-0) then took care of business from the No. 1 position, as he easily dismantled Strahinja Trecakov in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 to put the Cats on the brink of victory, while clinching his team-best sixth consecutive singles win.

With Arizona up 3-0, Sumeet Shinde (5-1, 5-1 Dual) came through with the clinching point, earning a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Germain Degardin on court two, improving to 2-0 from that position this season.

David Mushayev (5-8, 3-3 Dual) then extended Arizona's lead to 5-0, as he grinded out a 7-5, 6-4 win from the No. 4 spot.

Moments later, Shoki Kasahara (11-9, 4-3 Dual) gutted out a 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 win over Patrick Pfisater on court five before Trevor James (3-5, 1-4 Dual) finished off the sweep with a straight-set, 7-6, 6-2 win over Charles Baron on court six to finish off the sweep.

Arizona will be back in action this Friday, as it hosts in-state rival Northern Arizona at 10 am MST out at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center, in what will mark match nine of its season-long 12-match homestand.
