Taking a Splash with... Sally Hackett

This week's Q&A features junior diver, Sally Hackett as she talks about what it is like to dive at Arizona.

Q: What made you start diving?

A: I decided to switch to diving after finishing gymnastics, because I wasn't enjoying it anymore. It was an easy transition, because both sports have similar features.

Q: What is your favorite memory from diving?

A: My favorite memory from diving has to be competing for Australia.

Q: Best part of diving at Arizona?

A: The best part of diving at Arizona is that you can call the team your family.

Q: Is there something you have to do before every meet?

A: I have to throw my chamois down before every dive.

Q: What music do you listen to before meets?

A: I usually listen to motivational music that gets me really pumped up – the Rolling Stones, UFO.

Q: What is your favorite event to dive in?

A: I like the 3m springboard because it's not too high, and I usually compete pretty well in that event.

Q: How has it been adjusting to Tucson from Australia?

A: The weather is basically the same, which is nice because I like the heat. It was not hard to adjust, however Tucson is a very different place. It is a great place to spend four years at college, and I really love the mountains.

Q: What is one thing you wish to accomplish this season?

A: My main goal this season is to be consistently improving, and to make points at NCAAs.

Q: How do you balance academics with diving?

A: Even though I spend a lot of time diving, academics is also very important to me. I am majoring in Veterninary Science, so volunteering and experience is a big aspect. I usually spend Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, as well as Sundays, volunteering. The rest of the week I catch up on homework and assignments. I use Saturdays as my day off school work.

Q: What is your favorite class?

A: Right now my favorite classes are Diseases in Wildlife, and Anatomy and Physiology of Domestic Animals. Even though they are challenging, they interest me.

Q: Who is your biggest influence/inspiration?

A: My biggest inspiration is my mum, because she always wants the best for me and my family.

Q: What is one interesting fact about yourself?

A: I have visited every continent except Antarctica.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: I like to hang out with my friends, volunteer with animals, play with dogs, listen to music and go to the beach.

Q: Where do you see yourself in five years?

A: I see myself as a qualified veterinarian living in Hawaii.

Q: Who is your celebrity crush?

A: Liam Hemsworth.

Q: What was your favorite childhood TV show?

A: SpongeBob SquarePants.

Q: If you could meet any singer/band, who would it be?

A: Definitely the Rolling Stones.

Q: If you could be any animal, what would you be?

A: A dog in a loving family.

Q: Where would your dream vacation be?

A: Sailing around the Caribbean.

Q: What is your favorite kind of ice cream?

A: Chocolate.
