WINDSOR, Canada – Sophomore
Katrina Konopka earned her first international gold medal on day one of the FINA Short Course World Championships in Windsor in the 4x100 freestyle relay. She then made a name for herself worldwide by setting the short-course meter world record in the 4x50 medley relay on day two, notching her second gold of the championships.
Konopka anchored the 4x50m medley relay in the prelims and final. The team of Ali DeLoof, Lilly King, Kelsi Worrell and Konopka dominated the relay event, touching in a time of 1:43.27 and setting a new world record. Konopka's freestyle split came in at 23.93.
The previous world record was set by Denmark two years ago at 1:44.04.
The Arizona sophomore, along with DeLoof, Molly Hannis and Sarah Gibson, placed second in the prelims of the 4x50 medley relay with 1:45.67, qualifying for the finals.
On day one of the championships, Konopka led off the 4x100m freestyle relay in the prelims. Along with Katie Drabot, Madison Kennedy and DeLoof, the team finished seventh in the prelims with a time of 3:34.98 to qualify for the finals later that night.
In the finals, Kennedy, Amanda Weir, Worrell and Mallory Comerford swam to a first-place finish with 3:28.82. Since Konopka contributed in the prelims of the event, she is also awarded a gold medal.
