Box Score Palo Alto, Calif. – Stanford used a hot start to take control and down visiting Arizona 82-58 Friday night at Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinal, ranked No. 14 in the latest AP Top 25, shot better than 50 percent from the field and outrebounded Arizona 38-26 in the victory.
Sophomore guard JaLea Bennett led the Wildcats with 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting. Bennett also had three offensive rebounds. It was Bennett's first double-digit scoring output since scoring 14 against Louisiana Tech in early December. The Wildcats (11-13, 2-10 Pac-12) also got strong contributions from a pair of freshmen in Michal Miller and Destiny Graham.
Miller also scored 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting. It was her second highest output of the season and most in a Pac-12 game this season. It also marked the first time she reached double digits since scoring 16 against Howard in November. Graham, who played her high school ball in Palo Alto at Eastside College Prep, finished with six points and eight rebounds. The eight rebounds were just one shy of her season best, set in the first game of the season at Toledo.
Stanford (19-5, 9-3 Pac-12) shot 50 percent (14 of 28) from the field in the first half to build a 41-21 lead at the break. Karlie Samuelson and Erica McCall led the Cardinal with eight points apiece. Stanford outrebounded Arizona 19-14 in the first half and had nine steals, leading to 12 total turnovers by Arizona.
The Cardinal hit nine of their first 11 shots from the field and built a lead from the start. When Kaylee Johnson hit a layup with 5:19 left in the opening quarter, it gave Stanford a 17-2 lead to start the game and capped a 9-0 run for the Cardinal. Jones ended the drought with a jumper.
The Cardinal led 24-7 after the opening period and built it up to as many as 25 points in the second. Jones and Bennett each finished with seven points in the first half to lead the Cats. Bennett played 15 minutes in the first and was active for the Wildcats throughout. She grabbed three offensive rebounds and added a steal and an assist. Jones played 16 minutes and had seven points on 3 of 7 shooting. She also had one block and one steal.
Arizona returns to action Sunday when it travels to Cal for a 1 p.m., MST game. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Arizona and Pac-12 Bay Area. The Wildcats topped Cal 57-52 in the previous meeting this season last month at McKale Center.
