NEW ORLEANS, La., The Wildcats fought hard on their first day on the courts in New Orleans against No. 33 Tulane, but could not keep up as they were defeated 4-1 at City Park Pepsi Center.
“I felt despite the loss today, we played with very good energy and competed hard,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “ Tulane is a top 25 level team and we put ourselves in position in spots to get wins. If we can play with this type of style every match, we can definitely sneak up on some very good teams.”
The Cats started off the afternoon with doubles play. They fought hard but could not keep up with Tulane. Alex Van Cott and Ian Van Cott defeated Shoki Kasahara and Jason Jaruvang on court three, 6-2. Chi-Shan Jao and Dominik Koepfer defeated Will Kneale and Oliver Plaskett 6-3 on court one, giving Tulane a 1-0 lead over Arizona.
Naoki Takeda and Will Adkisson were tied with Constantin Schmitz and Sebastian Rey 4-4 on court two until their match was abandoned.
Will Kneale put the Cat's first point on the board in singles play, as he defeated Alex Van Cott 6-1, 6-2 on court four. Kneale is now 9-1 on the season.
Chi-Shan Jao defeated Trent Botha 6-1, 6-3 on court five while Constantin Schmitz beat Jason Jaruvang on court two 6-4, 6-2, giving Tulane a 3-1 lead over Arizona.
Sebastian Rey clinched the match for Tulane, as he defeated Harry Busby on court three 7-5, 6-3.
Naoki Takeda was tied with NO. 1 Dominik Koepfer 7-6, 8-6, (2-2) until his match was abandoned.
The Wildcats will be back on the courts tomorrow to take on UCF at 11 a.m. MST.
