Texas Recap
Arizona swimming and diving fell to Texas in its road meet last weekend. The men were outscored, 121-164 as three different swimmers each tallied a victory.
Justin Wright (200 fly),
Brendan Meyer (500 free) and
Thomas Anderson (200 back) each added a win for the Wildcats.
The women dropped their meet, 128-164.
Katrina Konopka had a strong performance with second-place finishes in the 50 free and 100 free in addition to both relay events.
Sally Hackett also finished second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter.
Looking at the Competition
The Arizona State No. 13 men's team is on a two-meet lose streak, dropping its meets against Stanford and California. Overall, the Sun Devils are 4-2 on the season with a 2-2 Pac-12 record. Most notably, the ASU men knocked off No. 15 USC with a 156.50-142.50 victory over the Trojans on the road.
The unranked Arizona State women's swimming and diving team is 5-4 on the season with a 2-4 conference record. Most recently, the women dropped dual meets against Stanford and California. Earlier on, ASU earned a victory over Oregon State, 164-89. Â
History versus Arizona State
The men faced Arizona State last season in Tempe falling 168-132 and losing to the Sun Devils for the first time since 2002. Meanwhile, the women dominated ASU with a 208-88 victory, winning 12 of the 16 events.
When the Wildcats and Sun Devils last met at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, Arizona swept ASU with a 174-117 victory for the men and 176.5-118.5 win for the women.
Senior Class Accolades
Arizona is honoring six seniors on Saturday with the celebrations starting at 10:30 a.m. MST:
Sally Hackett,
Karolyn Loftus,
Gage Crosby,
Tyler Fowler,
Thane Maudslien and
Renny Richmond.
All six Arizona seniors have made it to the NCAA Championships at least once in his or her career. Maudslien and Richmond lead the seniors, qualifying for the NCAAs in all three of their previous seasons.
Sally Hackett
Hackett, a City Beach, Australia native, is a Veterinary Sciences major, earning Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention honors her sophomore year. As a junior, Hackett qualified for her first NCAA Championships seventh in the 3-meter and 11th in the platform at Zones. At the NCAA Championships, she finished in the top 23 in the platform. Hackett leads the team in the 1-meter and 3-meter this season.
Karolyn Loftus
Loftus, from Kent, Washington, is a Psychology major with a Special Education and Rehabilitation minor. In her second season, Loftus qualified for the NCAA Championships in the platform after a strong performance at the NCAA Zone E Championships where she placed ninth in the event. She currently leads the team in the platform with her season-best score coming from a second-place finish at the Texas Diving Invite.
Gage Crosby
Crosby is a Business Management major from Bentonville, Arkansas. Crosby is a Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team and honorable mention honoree. He holds the tenth-fastest time in Arizona history in the 200 breast from his junior year at the Texas Invitational. Crosby qualified for his first NCAA Championships that same season in the 100 breast and 200 breast. This season, he leads the team in 200 breast and holds two top-100 times in the NCAA (100 breast, 200 breast).
Tyler Fowler
Fowler, from Liberty, Missouri, is a Biomedical Engineering major with a mathematics minor. Fowler has earned two Pac-12 All-Academic First Team honors. He has qualified for the NCAA Championships for the past two season, with a best 17th-place finish in the 1,650 free as a sophomore. Fowler holds two of the top-ten fastest times in Arizona history, coming in the 1,000 free and 1,650 free. This season, he also holds two top-100 times in the NCAA (500 free, 1,000 free).Â
Thane Maudslien
Maudslien is a General Studies Social Behavior and Human Understanding major from Burien, Washington. Maudslien has competed at the NCAA Championships all three of his previous years from relays and individual events. He has earned four All-America honorable mention honors from finishing in the top 16 of relay events. Maudslien holds the third-fastest time in Arizona history in the 200 back. This season, he has three times in the top 100 in the NCAA from the 200 free, 200 back and 200 IM.
Renny Richmond
Richmond, a Haiku, Hawaii native, is majoring in Geography. Richmond has competed at the NCAA Championships all of his prior three years at Arizona. He has tallied an All-America honor and three All-America honorable mention honors from relay events. Richmond was a member of the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay team that earned a Pac-12 title last season. He holds two Arizona all-time top-ten times, coming in the 50 free and 100 fly. Renny currently holds an NCAA top-100 time in the same events this season.
Justin Wright: Flying High
Sophomore
Justin Wright has maintained his momentum from last season in the 200 fly. Wright ended the 2016 Pac-12 Championships by breaking the Arizona school record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:41.76. He then finished third in the B final at the NCAA Championships, earning All-America honorable mention honors.
This season, Wright has not finished lower than second place each time he has swam in the event. At the Texas Invitational, Wright notched his season-best time with a victory in the prelims (1:42.73). He later went to take second in the finals. Other notable wins include at No. 3 Texas and against No. 11 Stanford.
Katrina Konopka: Top-Two Crew
Sophomore
Katrina Konopka has also had success in her best event, the 50 free. Konopka has yet to finish lower than second place this season. The sophomore won the event in four meets in a row, including in the prelims and finals at the Texas Invitational for her season-best time (21.90), breaking the 22-second mark.
Konopka has finished second in the last three dual-meets against the top-three teams in the CSCAA Rankings (No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 California, No. 3 Texas).
Arizona in the Rankings
The Cats have multiple swimmers in the USA Swimming Top-100 Times this season. The women have 45 swimmers with times in the top 100 of all the conferences' swimmers while the men have 55.
The women have 11 total times in the top 20 of the rankings coming from six swimmers. They are led by sophomore
Katrina Konopka and freshman
Hannah Cox with three each. Konopka is sixth in the 50 free, 12th in the 200 free and 14th in the 100 back. Cox has the seventh-fastest time in the 500 free, 15th in the 200 free and 19th in the 400 IM. Sophomore
Annie Ochitwa has two top-20 times, notching the 16th-fastest in the 100 fly and tying for the 18th-fastest time in the 100 back.
Three other swimmers each have a top-20 time. Junior
Tjasa Oder is tenth in the 1,650 free, freshman
Kennedy Lohman has the 12th-fastest time in the 100 breast and sophomore
Taylor Garcia is 20th in the 100 back.
Also coming from six swimmers, the men have totaled eight top-20 times this season. Junior
Nick Thorne and sophomore
Chatham Dobbs together contributed half of them. Thorne holds the tenth-fastest time in the 400 IM and is tied for the 14th-fastest in the 200 IM. Dobbs has the eighth-fastest time in the 100 back and is tenth in the 100 fly. Sophomore
Justin Wright also has a top-ten time, currently holding the seventh-fastest in the 200 fly.
Junior
Chris Wieser holds the tenth-fastest time in the 500 free,
Chad Idensohn is ranked 12th in the 100 fly and sophomore
Blair Bish has the 14th-fastest time in the 100 breast to round out the Cats' eight top-20 times.
Freshman Strong
Arizona has 15 freshmen this season, seven for the women and eight for the men. Of the women's 55 victories this season, freshman have contributed 16 of them. Ten alone have come from
Hannah Cox, while
Kirsten Jacobsen and
Kennedy Lohman have also added to that number.
