Wildcats Take Down NAU to Close Out Home-Stand

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona men's tennis team concluded its six-match homestand and is now 6-2 on the season with a 5-2 win over Northern Arizona University today.

The doubles tandem of senior Oliver Plaskett and junior Tent Botha started in a 0-1 deficit on court one against the NAU Junior Sebastian Eguez and Sophomore Ruben Montano, but the duo quickly found their stride and won the match 6-2. Juniors Shoti MeparidzeĀ AND WHO started with a 3-0 lead over NAU sophomores Lucas Taylor and Tim Handel, who put together an impressive comeback bid, but fell 6-4, giving Arizona the doubles point.

Despite the doubles point already being decided, freshman Alejandro Reguant and junior Shoki Kasahara completed their match against NAU's Felix Schumann and Thomas Fisher, where they won in a tie-breaker (7-6(5)).

In singles competition, Plaskett quickly brought the score to 2-0 with his two set victory over Fisher on court six (6-1, 6-3). Kasahara wasn't far behind, and his 6-3 6-2 win over Montano on court five brought Arizona within one point of victory.

After Kasahara's victory, things tightened up. Meparidze lost a tough, three-set affair to Handel on court one, but Arizona was eventually able to get the fourth and crucial point when Eguez, Reguant's opponent on court four, retired from his match.

With the match already decided at 4-1, the teams decided to continue playing. Taylor's victory over Botha on court three brought the score to 4-2 and Kneale's 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Schumann on court two finalized the score at 5-2, Arizona.

The Wildcats now have a little over a week to prepare for their first of seven away opponents: Fresno State, on Saturday, February 25th in Los Angeles Calif.
