TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats scored their most runs in a game since 2006 on Saturday afternoon when they took care of Hartford 25-3 in front of 2,304 fans at Hi Corbett Field.
The 25 runs are the most in a game for the Cats since plating 29 against Washington State in 2006. The 25-run game comes on the heels of a 21-5 win in Friday's series opener versus the Hawks. The 46 runs in back-to-back games are the most since Arizona scored 49 in back-to-back games against BYU in 2003. The Cats have pounded out 45 hits, seven doubles, three triples and two home runs in the first two games of the series against Hartford.
Arizona sent 18 batters to the plate in the fifth inning and exploded for a 14-run inning to break the game open and keep the bats going.
All total, Arizona had eight players register multiple-hit games in the win, led by Alfonso Rivas, who went 4 for 4 with three RBI, two runs scored and a double. Rivas is 6 for 7 in the first two games with five RBI and a home run. Senior shortstop
Kyle Lewis had a three-hit game and
Cal Stevenson,
Matt Fraizer,
JJ Matijevic, Nick Quintana,
Sawyer Gieseke and
Jared Oliva all had two-hit games.
Quintana went 2 for 2 with three RBI and two runs scored and hit his first collegiate home run in the 14-run fifth inning.
Starting pitcher
Michael Flynn earned the win, tossing five innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out four over 70 pitches. He's now 2-0 on the season with a 1.40 ERA. Flynn and the Wildcats actually had to work from behind for an inning in Saturday's lopsided win.
Like Friday, Hartford scored a pair of runs in the first inning to take an early lead. But also like Friday, Arizona responded right away. On Friday, the Cats plated five runs in the first; on Saturday, they settled for four.
Stevenson started the rally for the second straight day with a one-out single. He moved to third on a single from Rivas. Matijevic then got Arizona on the board with a double to deep center to score Stevenson. Quintana followed with a walk to load the bases with one out. Salazar then reached on a fielder's choice, but Rivas was thrown out at the plate. Oliva picked him up though when he doubled to left to score Matijevic and Quintana and give Arizona a 3-2 lead. Salazar later scored on a wild pitch for Arizona's fourth run of the inning.
Flynn tossed a scoreless second and the Cats went right back to work in the bottom half. Lewis led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a single from
Mitchell Morimoto. Stevenson followed with a line drive single to score Lewis. Rivas also singled to score Morimoto and Stevenson eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Quintana.
After scoring one more in the fourth to go up 8-2, Arizona put the game on ice in the fifth with their offensive explosion. In that inning, Lewis had two RBI singles, Rivas had a two-run single, Matijevic had an RBI double, Quintana drove in two with his home run, Fraizer had an RBI single and
Shane Martinez had a two-run single. When it was all said and done, Arizona sent 18 men to the plate and had 11 hits in the inning.
The Cats' bullpen took it from there.
Cody Deason,
Ryan Gowens,
Juan Aguilera and
Randy Labaut pitched the final four innings in relief of Flynn, giving up just one run on three hits.
Arizona upped its team batting average to .369 and have 58 extra-base hits in 14 games. The Cats also have five players – Morimoto, Quintana, Oliva, Matijevic and Rivas – all hitting better than .400 with 36 or more at-bats.
Coach
Jay Johnson's team will now go for the sweep Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Left-handed pitcher
Rio Gomez will start for the Cats.
