CORPUS CRISTI, Tex. – The Arizona men's tennis team gave a solid effort, but wasn't able to upset 28th-ranked South Alabama in the 51st annual HEB Tennis Tournament in Corpus Christi. The 4-0 loss brings the Wildcats' record to 8-5 on the spring season.
"We lost a tough match today," said head coach
Clancy Shields. "Congratulations to South Alabama, they are having a great season and added to that today. The score wasn't indicative of how close the match was. I thought that our guys competed well and every match we were a few points away from it going our way. We are in the process of building winning habits, and we will look back at this weekend in the future as a giant step in the right direction for our program."
Cougar freshman Loic Cloes bested freshman
Alejandro Reguant in two competitive sets on court four to give South Alabama a 1-0 lead. Junior
Trent Botha couldn't come back from a set one tiebreaker loss to freshman Clement Marzol on court three and would fall in set two, giving South Alabama a 2-0 lead. The Cougars would pull within one point of victory with senior Tuki Jacobs' win over senior
Will Kneale on court two. Junior
Shoki Kasahara fought hard, but South Alabama senior Pierre Noyon managed to complete the sweep with a 6-4, 7-5 win, halting seniors
Shoti Meparidze and
Oliver Plaskett's matches on courts one and six.
The Wildcats will continue play on the road and only have six days to prepare for their next matches which will be in Denver, Colorado. Arizona is scheduled to play Denver on Friday, March 10th at 1 p.m. MST and Cal Poly on Saturday, March 11 also at 1 p.m. MST.
