Wildcats Drop Conference Match to Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. –  The Arizona men's tennis team fell to 9-11 on the season after suffering a 4-0 loss at the hands of  No. 9 California today.

"Half our team came to play today and believed that we could win, and the other half did not," head coach Clancy Shields remarked. "The results are indicative of that belief and effort. We need to believe that victory is achievable every time we step on the court and it is our responsibility to give ourselves that chance. We have to address this in the upcoming week and look to finish our home schedule strong this weekend."

Cal junior J.T. Nishimura and freshman Bjorn Hoffmann bested juniors Shoki Kasahara and Shoti Meparidze by a score of 6-1 on doubles court two. Senior Will Kneale and freshman Andres Reyes battled on court three, but eventually fell to Cal freshman Dominic Barretto and senior Filip Bergevi by a score of 6-2, guaranteeing California the doubles point.

The Golden Bears kept their momentum rolling in singles play. Nishimura defeated Kasahara on court four not long before Hoffmann took down junior Trent Botha on court three, bringing the score to 3-0 in favor of Cal. California junior and 71st-ranked Billy Griffith took down Meparidze on court one to clinch the match.

The Wildcats will resume conference action on Friday, April 7th at 2:00 p.m. MST as they are scheduled to take on No. 32 Washington inside of LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. After that match, Arizona will have Saturday to rest before taking on No. 23 Oregon in what will be the final home match for seniors Will Kneale and Oliver Plaskett.
