No. 2 Arizona Takes Game 1 over 14th-Ranked Utah

Story Links

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Danielle O'Toole allowed one run on five hits and Tamara Statman drove in three runs, helping the second-ranked Wildcats win game 1, 5-1 over No. 14 Utah at Dumke Family Stadium.

The Wildcats did the majority of their offensive work in a four-run, five-hit fourth inning, using a trio of doubles to throw a four-spot on the scoreboard.

That would be plenty of support for O'Toole (22-1), who allowed just one run on five hits. The senior struck out six and walked one in the complete-game effort. O'Toole had allowed just one hit through five innings before Utah put up four hits in the final two frames and plated its only run of the game.

Arizona improved to 41-1 (13-0 Pac-12) with its 26th straight victory. The Wildcats have both the nation's longest winning streak and its best record. Utah fell to 26-8 (8-3 Pac-12). With both the Utes' loss and Oregon's loss to Washington on Thursday, the Wildcats moved three games in the loss column ahead of second place in the Pac-12.

Statman went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and three RBI to lead the Wildcat offense, which plated five runs on seven hits.

The bottom of the UA order reached base in seven of its nine plate appearances, including five hits.

After Utah starter Katie Donovan retired the first five batters of the game, Jessie Harper drew a two-out walk in the second inning. Tamara Statman followed with an RBI triple, her second of her career, to give the Cats a 1-0 lead.

Arizona added to its lead with four runs on five hits in the fourth. Two, two-run doubles from Statman and Mandie Perez brought in the four runs for the Wildcats.

Utah put up three hits and a run in the bottom of the seventh to break up O'Toole's shutout bid.

Game Notes:
  • Arizona's 41-1 start is the best in the NCAA since the Wildcats started 41-1 (eventually 45-1) in 2004.
  • The Wildcats are 13-0 in Pac-12 play, becoming the first team to win their first 13 Pac-12/10 games since the Wildcats started 13-0 (eventually 23-0) in 1994.
  • Tamara Statman's double and triple marked her first career game with multiple extra base hits.
  • Arizona's 25-game winning streak is its longest since winning the first 34 games of 2004.
  • Mandie Perez extended her hitting streak to seven games, the longest active streak on the team. She had two RBI tonight and now has at least one RBI in six games during her hitting streak.
  • Arizona failed to hit a home run for the first time in its last 13 games. The Wildcats entered the weekend having hit home runs in 21 of the last 22 games.
  • Arizona allowed a run in the seventh inning. Six of the 13 runs allowed by UA pitchers in Pac-12 play have occurred in the seventh inning.
  • The Wildcats are now 7-1 on the season vs. ranked opponents and 19-1 away from Hillenbrand Stadium (10-0 in true road games).
  • The Wildcats have now allowed two or fewer runs in 37 of their 41 games this year.

Up Next: Arizona will go for its fifth straight series victory on Friday at 3 p.m. MST on the Pac-12 Networks.
