Wildcats Lose to No. 7 UCLA in California

LOS ANGELES – The Arizona men's tennis team will head back to Arizona with a 9-15 record after falling to 7th-ranked UCLA in Los Angeles.

"UCLA played great today," commented head coach Clancy Shields. "They jumped on top of us and never let us into the match. We had moments where we played at the level needed to win, but we couldn't sustain that level for long periods of time."

Seniors Oliver Plaskett and Will Kneale took two doubles sets against UCLA freshman Evan Zhu and junior Martin Redlicki, but fell to the 10th-ranked duo on court one by a score of 6-2. The Bruins took the doubles point when senior Joseph Di Giulio and junior Austin Rapp defeated juniors Trent Botha and Shoki Kasahara on court two by a score of 6-3.

Arizona couldn't turn things around in singles play where No. 43 Redlicki took down Kneale in straight sets on court two, increasing the Bruins lead to 2-0. Freshman Andres Reyes fell to UCLA freshman Ben Goldberg on court six by a score of 6-1, 6-1 not long before Zhu clinched the match for the Bruins with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Botha on court two. Play was stopped with junior Shoti Meparidze trailing No. 20 Brymer on court one, Kasahara trailing Bruin junior Logan Staggs on court four, and Plaskett trailing Rapp on court five.

Arizona has slightly less than a week to prepare for their final conference opponent of the regular season, Utah. The Utes are currently 15-9 on the season, 1-5 in conference play, and are coming off of losses to UCLA and USC this week.
