TUCSON, Ariz. – Utah scored six runs over the final two innings to top the Arizona Wildcats 7-3 Friday night in front of 4,104 fans at Hi Corbett Field.
The Wildcats dropped to 26-11 and 9-8 in Pac-12 play. Utah is now 16-17 overall and 7-0 in league play.
The game opened as a pitcher's duel between Arizona starter
Cameron Ming and Utah's Riley Ottesen with both hurlers on their game early. Ming tossed up zeroes each of the first five innings, and retired the first seven batters he faced. He gave up a single with one out in the third, but then got a double play to get out of the inning.
He posted another perfect inning in the fourth and faced the minimum through four. In the fifth, he gave up a walk and a single, but catcher
Cesar Salazar erased both runners at different times trying to advance on wild pitches.
Ottesen matched Ming over the first five innings. The cats got two men on in the second, but couldn't scrape across any runs. In the fifth,
Cameron Cannon singled with two outs, but that was it for the Cats offense through five.
In the sixth, Utah finally got to Ming, who had still faced the minimum through five. Dominic Foscalina doubled with one out and was brought home on an RBI single from shortstop Ellis Kelly to make it 1-0. Ming got out of the inning with no further damage and his offense got the run back in the bottom half of the inning.
Cal Stevenson opened the bottom of the sixth with a walk and moved to second on a ground out and to third on a fly out.
JJ Matijevic then walked with two outs to put runners on the corners for
Mitchell Morimoto. Morimoto singled up the middle to score Stevenson and even the game up at one apiece.
Ming opened the seventh inning with a walk, and coach
Jay Johnson went to reliever
Cody Deason, who got a double play himself to escape a bases loaded jam and keep the game tied. The Cats took the lead in the bottom half of the inning when
Louis Boyd doubled with one out to score Salazar and make it 2-1.
But Utah came alive in the eighth and ninth to blow the game open late. After Kelly doubled with one out, Deason exited for
Tylor Megill, who gave up a pair of RBI singles, which allowed Utah to take a 3-2 lead.
In the ninth, the Utes added four more off Megill, Alfonso Rivas and
Luke Soroko to make it 7-2 going into the bottom of the ninth. Rivas scored pinch-hitter
Matt Fraizer on an RBI groundout to make the score 7-3, which held up as the final.
The Cats will look to salvage a game in the series Saturday evening. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
