No. 8 Cats Sweep Cal to Close Out Senior Day

TUCSON, Ariz.– The Wildcats concluded its senior weekend of play with a sweep, taking down Cal, (5-0). The No. 8 team now holds a (15-8) record heading into the Arizona hosted, 2017 Pac-12 Championships next week.

Seniors Halli Amaro, Madison Witt, and McKenna Witt were all presented with roses from head coach Steve Walker, assistant coach Kyra Iannone, and volunteer assistant coach Austin Hosto. The ladies took the sand with family and friends, as they would be entering BearDownBeach for their last 'regular season' match.

"In general, I think we got off to a little bit of a slow start having the bi-weekend, but I was really proud of how we competed against Stanford, a team that's really on the rise. Today, we came out and played a sharp match start to finish, all teams top to bottom," said head coach Steve Walker. "I'm especially happy for the seniors Halli (Amaro) and the Witt twins. It means so much to me what they've done for this institution and the athletics department for the indoor and beach programs. It really can't be measured what they've done for us. I'm so proud of those girls, and I'm really happy to send them off with a couple of wins."

Madison and McKenna Witt, the No. 1 6'1 twin duo and No. 3 pair of Hailey Devlin and Sam Manley lead the team with a (17-6) record respectively.

UA won five matches in straight sets to finish out the day of play.

The No. 5 Arizona pair of Halli Amaro and Natalie Anselmo took home the first victory of the day as they picked up a win against Teya Neff and Bridget Gustafson in consecutive sets, (21-17, 21-15). Mia Mason and Brooke Burling battled it out on the sand as they earned a victory against Iya Lindahl and Madison Dueck, (28-26, 21-17) forcing Arizona to the lead in the overall team score.

"Senior day is awesome, especially when we come out with a win as a team, and the seniors end up playing really well," said Senior Halli Amaro. "We all won our sets in our games, but it was a team effort, so I think as a person who's gone through Senior Day twice, each experience you have is different with it. Being outside, it's a little hotter than the weather we've been playing in in a while. It's fun though, and I'm excited for Pac-12's that are coming up this weekend"

Madison and McKenna Witt in the No. 1 pair would then go on to close out their final regular season match dominating against Jessica Gaffney and Olivia Rodberg, (21-12, 21-10). The No. 2 tandem of Olivia Hallaran and Olivia Macdonald took down Cals' Camile Stepanpf and Bryce Bark in consecutive sets, (21-15, 21-9).

To clinch the sweep, Hailey Devlin and Sam Manley earned a victory against the Bears duo of Grace Campbell and Nicole Anderson,  (21-15, 21-17).

The Wildcat's will hit the sand next week as they prepare to host the 2017 Pac-12 Championships on April 27-29.
