PALO ALTO, Calif. – Arizona dropped its second straight one-run game to Stanford on Friday, falling to the Cardinal 4-3 in front of 2,327 fans at Sunken Diamond.
Arizona fell to 27-14 on the season and 9-11 in Pac-12 play. Stanford improved to 26-12 and 10-7 in conference games.
The Cardinal broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning when Matt Winaker blooped a single to left field on a checked swing off
Rio Gomez to put a man on base with two outs. The next batter, shortstop Nico Hoerner, singled to left field and the ball got past left fielder Alfonso Rivas, trickling all the way to the wall. Winaker was able to come all the way around from first base to score the eventual winning run.
Arizona didn't have anyone reach in the eighth. In the ninth, the Cats had two mean reach with two outs when
Cesar Salazar drew a walk and
Louis Boyd followed with a single. But a called strike three ended the game, giving the Cardinal the victory.
Winaker got the Cardinal on the board right away in the first inning when he homered on the first pitch Stanford saw to give his team a 1-0 lead. Arizona starter
JC Cloney settled down from there and held Stanford scoreless over the next four innings. In the fifth, the Cats would tie it up for Cloney.
Cory Voss opened the inning with a single and Nick Quintana followed with a walk to put two men on.
Ryan Haug then dropped down a bunt, advancing Voss to third. Catcher Maverick Handley went to second base to get Quintana to put runners on the corners with one out. Boyd then dropped down a perfect safety squeeze bunt to score Voss and tie the game at one apiece.
In the bottom half of the inning, Stanford came right back and scored a run to take its second lead of the game at 2-1.
But Arizona responded with two runs in the sixth to grab its first lead of the game.
Cal Stevenson led the inning off with a walk, and
Jared Oliva then reached on a throwing error by Winaker on a sacrifice bunt to put runners on the corners with no outs.
JJ Matijevic singled to right to score Stevenson and tie the game. Rivas followed with an infield single to score Oliva and make it 3-2.
But Stanford again came right back, tying the game up in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run from Daniel Bakst. The Cats then didn't score in the top of the seventh, setting up Stanford's go-ahead run in the bottom half.
Matijevic collected his 45
th RBI of the season in the game to lead the Pac-12. Cloney went 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while striking out a season-high eight.
Arizona will look to salvage a game against the Cardinal on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
