TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona (9-12) tried to pull off an upset over No. 35 Washington (12-6) on Friday, Apr. 7 in Tucson, but came up just short in a 4-3 loss.
Arizona started off strong in doubles, where seniors
Will Kneale and
Oliver Plaskett took down Washington sophomore Piers Foley and junior Jake Douglas in a hard fought match on court one (6-3). Freshman
Andres Reyes and junior
Shoti Meparidze couldn't best freshman Amit Batta and senior Wendell Watanabe on court three, falling in Reyes' first home doubles match by a score of 6-4. With the doubles point at stake, juniors
Shoki Kasahara and
Trent Botha took down Washington sophomores Enzo Sommer and Kawika Lam (7-5).
The singles draw was highly contested across the board. The Huskies claimed the first point when Batta defeated Plaskett 7-5, 6-3. Kasahara responded with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Gal Hakak. Washington tied the match at 2-2 with Mitch Stewart's 7-5, 6-2 win over Meparidze. The Cats regained the lead with Kneale's 7-5, 6-4 victory over Sommer. Foley defeated Reyes 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, leaving the fate of the match to be decided on court No. 3. Botha battled back from match point in the second set to force a third, but wasn't quite able to complete the matchup. He lost to Douglas 7-6 (12-10), 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.
The Wildcats have just a day to rest and prepare for their next opponent, No. 25 Oregon, on Sunday, April 9 at 11 a.m. MST. This will be the final home match of seniors
