AUSTIN – Eleven Track Cats were in action today at the NCAA West Prelims in Austin, Texas and saw one athlete advance to the next round as
Sage Watson clocked a time of 57.35 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Â
"I thought
Sage Watson handled herself like a real professional," head coach
Fred Harvey said. "It was a tough race in the sense that there was a major headwind down the back stretch, but she has been solid all year long. I have so much confidence in her as an athlete and a person in terms of how she prepares herself for competitions. Tomorrow is really important because you have to run a good, quality time because you are competing against the east region right now. Those times tomorrow will seed them in the finals in Eugene. I'm looking forward to great things from her."
Â
Watson cruised to an easy victory in heat six and will run in tomorrow's quarterfinals at 7 p.m. CT with a trip to Eugene on the line. Her time of 57.35 was the second-fastest time of the day in the women's 400-meter hurdles.
Â
Grayson Fleming put up a new personal best in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 205-8 (62.60m). He was in ninth place at the conclusion of his heat, but fell out of the top 12 during heat three and ended up finishing in 25th place, not enough to qualify for the finals in Eugene. Coming into the meet, Fleming was 31st in the west region.
Â
The trio of
Miles Parish,
Zakee Washington and
Bryce Houston did not qualify for tomorrow's quarterfinals in the 400-meter dash. Parish did have the 24th-fastest time as he clocked in at 46.90, but there were three slower times that finished in the top three in their respective heat, bumping 22-24 out of the quarterfinals. He made up quite a bit of ground as he came into the meet 41st in the west region. Washington finished in 33rd with a time of 47.34 and Houston took 38th with a time of 47.77.
Â
Diana Gajda clocked a time of 55.16 in the 400-meter dash, which was not fast enough to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals as she took 38th overall in the first round.
Addi Zerrenner finished in 23rd place with a time of 35:51.65, which will not send her to Eugene.Â
Â
Erik Mensendiek finished in 27th in the javelin throw and
Carlos Villarreal took 47th place in the 1500-meter race with neither qualifying for the next round.
Avery Mickens and
Myles Hawkins finished in 38th and 42nd place, respectively, in the men's long jump and will not advance to the finals in Eugene.
