Ming's Strong Effort Clinches Series Win for Cats

TUCSON, Ariz. – Cameron Ming threw Arizona's first complete game of the season Saturday night, lifting the Wildcats to a 3-1 win over Washington in front of 4,651 fans at Hi Corbett Field.

The junior left-hander went all nine innings, giving up just one run on five hits. He didn't issue any walks and struck out six, needing exactly 100 pitches to post his first career complete game. The victory improved Ming to 6-1 on the season and made the Wildcats 30-15 overall and 11-12 in Pac-12 play.

Making just his fourth start of the season and third straight weekend start, Ming had Washington's hitters off-balanced from the start. After the first two batters singled, Ming got a 6-4-3 double play for the first two outs of the game. That started a streak of 14 straight hitters being retired by Ming in the first through fifth innings.

Neither team had scored when Cesar Salazar got the Wildcats on the board in the fourth inning with a two-run home run. Salazar followed JJ Matijevic, who singled with one out. Salazar then unloaded on a pitch from Washington starter Jordan Jones that sailed over the wall in right field for a two-run home run. It was Salazar's second career home run and first at Hi Corbett Field to put the Wildcats up 2-0.

That stayed the score until the top of the sixth inning when the Huskies finally managed to get to Ming. Designated hitter Josh Cushing ended Ming's streak of 14 straight with a leadoff double. A single moved him to third, and then a sacrifice fly from Levi Jordan brought Cushing home to make it 2-1. Ming got the next batter to fly out for the second out of the inning. Third-place hitter MJ Hubbs then singled to right, but AJ Graffanino was nailed at third base for the final out of the inning.

Arizona got Ming an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning. Nick Quintana opened the inning with a double and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Mitchell Morimoto. Kyle Lewis then dropped down a safety squeeze bunt. The Huskies tried to get Quintana at the plate, but couldn't, allowing the third Arizona run to score.

That left Ming with a two-run lead with nine outs to get. The seventh inning opened with an error, but Ming got a 5-4-3 double play to erase the base runner. After another error, Ming got first baseman John Naff to ground out to end the inning.

That was the last bit of trouble Ming would get in. He retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth innings to nail down the win. He opened the eighth with a pair of strikeouts before getting a weak ground ball to Matijevic at first. In the ninth, he got a shallow fly out to right, a strikeout and then got the 27th out on a fly ball to Jared Oliva in center.

The effort marked Arizona's first complete game since JC Cloney tossed a shutout in Game 1 of the College World Series Finals last year against Coastal Carolina. Ming lowered his season ERA to 2.17.

Salazar finished 1 for 3 with the two-run home run and a walk. Matijevic had the lone multi-hit game for the Wildcats, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and a walk. Lewis was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

The Cats will now turn to sophomore right-hander Cody Deason on Sunday to try to complete the sweep of Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
