Cats Defeat UCLA, Win Pac-12 Championship

Story Links

WESTWOOD, Calif. -- Arizona closed out the regular season with a bang, defeating 12th-ranked UCLA 7-2 to clinch its 11th conference championship in program history, and first since 2007.

With the victory, Arizona improved to 48-7 (18-6 Pac-12), its highest regular-season win total since 2004 (53). The 18 conference victories mark the most since 2003 (19). Now, the Cats will take a week off, before learning their postseason fate on Sunday, May 14 at 7 p.m. MST on ESPN 2. The Wildcats were No. 3 in this week's committee rankings, and have likely put themselves in a position to host both regionals and super regionals for the first time since 2011. The Pac-12 Championship auto-bid clinched Arizona's 31st straight NCAA Tournament appearance, a new NCAA record.

Danielle O'Toole (27-4) was dominant for Arizona. The senior allowed just two runs on four hits in her 23rd complete-game of 2017. The senior fanned six and struck out one in her final career regular season game. O'Toole's 27th victory makes her UA's winningest pitcher since Kenzie Fowler (38) in 2010.

O'Toole was supported by an offense that plated seven runs on nine hits. After two frustrating shutout losses in games 1 and 2, Arizona's offense came to life on Sunday. UA opened the game with three straight singles before Harper hit her second grand slam in as many series finales.

That first-inning offensive outburst would have been enough for O'Toole, but the Cats added three in the fourth for good measure.

Harper went 2-for-3 with five RBI to lead the charge in the batter's box while Mandie Perez had three hits and Reyna Carranco added two.

The Wildcats opened the top of the first with four straight hits, punctuated by a Jessie Harper grand slam, her 19th homer of the year and second grand slam in a week.

In the fourth, after two hitless innings for relief pitcher Selina Ta'amilo, UA led off with a walk and a single to put two on. Mandie Perez singled to the UCLA shortstop, who then threw it away to allow a run to score and make it 5-0. With first base open, UCLA opted to intentionally walk Katiyana Mauga, but the first pitch went to the backstop to plate a run. Harper followed with an RBI double to give the Cats a 7-0 lead.

The Bruins added single runs in the fourth and the sixth.

Up Next: The bracket will be revealed on Sunday, May 14 at 7 p.m. MST on ESPN 2.
