O'Toole's One-Hit Shutout Highlights World Cup of Softball XII

TUCSON, Ariz. -- 2017 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year Danielle O'Toole and Team USA took home the silver medal in the World Cup of Softball XII in Oklahoma City, finishing runner-up to World No. 1 Japan courtesy of a 2-1 decision in the championship on Sunday.

Two days earlier, O'Toole, who pitched one scoreless inning in Sunday's championship, threw a one-hit shutout against the Japanese, slowing an offense that had averaged nearly nine runs per game in the tournament prior to the prime time meeting on ESPN2 on Friday night. O'Toole fanned three in the outing.

In four appearances in the circle, O'Toole had a 0.47 ERA and limited opponents to four total hits in 15 innings. The Upland, California native struck out 11 in the tournament.

The loss in the championship was Team USA's lone of the tournament; the Eagles finished the week 7-1. Japan earned its second straight gold medal in the World Cup of Softball.

Arizona had five current or former players competing for four different teams in the World Cup of Softball. In addition to O'Toole's silver medal, Jessie Harper, Dejah Mulipola and the U.S. Junior Women's National Team placed fifth with a 4-4 record, Chelsea Suitos and Team Phillipines finished seventh with a 3-5 record and Brigette Del Ponte and Team Mexico finished eighth with a 1-7 record.
