Men’s Tennis Lands Top Canadian Prospect Nick Lagaev

Tucson, Ariz. – The Wildcats have signed Nick Lagaev, who was ranked as high as number two in the Canadian Jr. rankings. Lagaev, of Vaughan Ontario, Canada will be suiting up for the the University of Arizona men's tennis team in the Fall of 2019.

Head coach Clancy Shields signed Lagaev in the midst of a 20-match win streak in singles and doubles on the ITF Junior circuit. Lagaey's competitive drive and love for the game make him a candidate to be a potential star under Shields' dynamic coaching style.

"I have been looking forward to this day for a long time, and I am very excited to welcome Nick Lagaev to the University of Arizona," Shields said. "Nick has a unique gift, an insatiable love for the game, and a competitive gene that is very rare to find today. I may have found my competitive match when it comes to Nick, he is a tremendous competitor, and doesn't shy away from competition. I know he will relentlessly find ways to compete when confronted with the competitiveness of the Pac-12 schedule. Keep your eyes out for Nick in the future, he is going to be a shining star in college tennis."

Lagaev was ranked as the No. 321 player in the ITF Junior Rankings and was rated as high as 13.09 on the Universal Tennis Rating. Lagaev made the finals in the Canadian Indoor National Championships and the Canadian Outdoor National Championships.

"I chose the University of Arizona for a couple reasons. The coaches there are very ambitious and the team as a whole are looking to do big things in the next couple years which is something I always wanted to be a part of," Lagaev said. "All the guys are so close to each other as well which I think is quite important because at the end of the day they are the people you will be going to war with. I like to think big when it comes to what the team and I want to accomplish and I think it is fair to say that the biggest goal would be to win the NCAAs which is something Arizona hasn't done before. It would be very neat to be on a team that does it for the first time. I think that with the potential we have at the University of Arizona it is definitely doable. I know these next couple years are going to be filled with many highs and lows but I am very excited and honored to have these opportunities and experiences at the University of Arizona and hope to leave a mark with all the great coaches and players around me. I know this program will be the start of something unbelievable."
