TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Sunday showdown against #49 Cal ended in a 4-1 loss for the Wildcats, dropping them to 12-7 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
 
Cal opened up the match with a strong performance in doubles. Dominic Barretto and Can Kaya took down Arizona's Trent Botha and Filip Malbasic 6-2 on court three. Cal's Griffith/Nishimura pairing clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over the freshman pairing of Igor Karpovets and Carlos Hassey.
 
The Golden Bears continued their momentum into doubles play, starting with Ben Draper's 6-3, 7-6(3) win over freshman Carlos Hassey. Sophomore Alejandro Reguant got the Cats on the board by defeating Jacob Brumm 6-3, 6-1. Bill Griffith earned the third point for the Golden Bears, and JT Nishimura rallied after losing the first set to Trent Botha to go on to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
 
"I thought we positioned ourselves good enough today to win the match," said head coach Clancy Shields. "We won four first sets in singles and were competing on all courts. The level is there to win matches like this today, we just need to grow and mature as a team and regroup for our big tournament coming up in San Diego. Congratulations to Alejandro on a big turn around from Friday. That is a very good win for him."
 
The Wildcats will head back to San Diego for the San Diego Spring Break Classic which starts on Friday.
