SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Arizona Wildcats closed out the San Diego Spring Classic with a 4-1 win over No. 46 Utah State.
The Aggies jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking 2 out of the 3 doubles matches.
Alejandro Reguant and
Filip Malbasic defeated Addy Vashistha and Felipe Acosta 6-3, but it wasn't enough to earn the doubles point.
The Wildcats turned the tables in singles play. Reguant cruised to a victory on court 5, beating Valdemar Holm 6-1, 6-0. Freshman
Igor Karpovets defeated Jaime Barajas 6-3, 6-2 on court 1, and
Jonas Maier took down Jose Carvajal 6-4, 6-3. Malbasic continued to dominate his matches, beating Samuel Serrano 6-4, 6-3. The remaining two matches went unfinished.
"I'm really proud of our team, and our response to losing the doubles point," said head coach
Clancy Shields. "I thought our team played together, raised their level when needed, and tuned out all the noise and distractions that a heated battle presents. We need to get better in doubles, we have to coach our guys up better, and our players need to raise their level of focus and execution. We are excited to come back to Tucson with a winning record."
The Wildcats (14-8) finish the San Diego Spring Classic with two wins and one loss. They return home to play New Mexico State on Saturday, March 24.
