SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Just over a week after the Wildcats defeated Fresno State to take third in the Blue Gray Classic, the teams meet again for a neutral site match in San Diego.
In the last matchup,
Carlos Hassey won a three-set thriller to edge the Cats ahead 4-3 and send Fresno State to 8-7 on the season. The Wildcats (10-5) are 9-6 all time against the Bulldogs.
Arizona freshman,
Aaro Pollanen, will look to continue his hot play after going 2-0 at the tournament last weekend. Fellow freshman
Filip Malbasic leads the team with 12 wins in singles play.
"I think we're two really evenly matched opponents, and when it comes down to two evenly matched opponents, it's just who wants it more. Who has the hustle and the desire to pull it out," said head coach
Clancy Shields. "Naturally, I think the team that loses the first match is probably going to want to win more than the other team because they want to get back at them. It will be an interesting challenge for our guys to try and win that tug-of-war match of wills, and to see if we can make a statement by going 2-0 against a really strong team."
This marks the first of four games this week for the Wildcats, and the penultimate non-conference match before they face off against Stanford on Friday.
