SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The rematch of last Saturday's Blue Gray consolation match ended the same way as the first, with an Arizona victory.
The Wildcats opened up play by taking the doubles point. The freshman pairing of
Igor Karpovets and
Carlos Hassey took down Fresno State's Cem Erturk and Zdenek Derkas 6-3. The Reguant/Maier pairing also won their doubles match by a score of 6-3 over Cagatay Soke and Jeremy Moser.
The Wildcats headed into singles play with a 1-0 lead and never looked back. Junior
Jonas Maier rolled 6-3, 6-4 victory over Derkas, and freshman
Aaro Pollanen continued his strong play with 6-3, 7-5 win against Jeremy Moser to make it 3-0 Cats. Sophomore
Alejandro Reguant clinched the match by defeating Soke 6-1, 7-6. Karpovets and Malbasic won three-setters to collect the final two Wildcat points.
"This is a bittersweet win personally as it's never easy to coach against your brother," said head coach
Clancy Shields. "I'm proud of our team for coming out with poise and taking the fight to Fresno. We have to keep improving individually, but as a team we have never been stronger as a group."
Coach Shields is now 2-0 against his brother this year, and 11-5 overall for the season. The Cats have a busy week ahead of them as they take on UCSB on Tuesday, and begin Pac-12 play later in the week against Stanford and Cal.
