TUCSON, Ariz. -- The No. 16 USC Trojans left Tucson with a hard-fought 4-0 win on Friday.
 
The match began with tightly contested doubles play. The 10th-ranked doubles pairing of Brandon Holt and Riley Smith led things off with a 6-2 victory over Igor Karpovets and Aaro Pollanen on court one. Carlos Hassey and Filip Malbasic responded with a 6-2 win of their own over Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith. The 12th-ranked doubles pairing of Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven claimed the doubles point with a tiebreak win over Jonas Maier and Alejandro Reguant.
 
Singles play began with a dominant performance by Jake Devine on court 6 as he captured the first singles point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Carlos Hassey. Riley Smith followed suit with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Trent Botha to make it 3-0 Trojans. Brandon Holt, the 13th-ranked singles player in the nation, clinched the match for the Trojans, beating Karpovets 7-5, 6-4. Malbasic and Reguant each won a set for the Wildcats, but their matches went unfinished.
 
"We were serving for the doubles point, so that's exciting that we're putting ourselves in that position," said head coach Clancy Shields. "We just have to get over the hump, someway, somehow. We're in positions to win. It's a whole different match if we get that doubles point. I thought we started off singles really well. Igor jumped up and got a break. Filip won his first set easily, Alejandro won his first set. Jonas was in the match to win his first set. There were a lot of opportunities out there. USC is a good team, they have experience and have won a ton of national championships. We just have to start building a history here of pulling these matches out and buckling down on the winning moments. We'll get there, if we keep plugging away it'll happen."
 
The Wildcats' final home match of the season is Sunday against No. 2 UCLA at 12 p.m. MST.
