TUCSON, Ariz. -- The last home match of the regular season for the Arizona Wildcats ended in a 4-0 defeat at the hands of No. 2 UCLA.
 
The Wildcats came out strong in doubles play, with Alejandro Reguant and Jonas Maier taking down the 11th-ranked doubles pairing in the nation by a score of 6-3. The Bruins would rebound however, taking matches on courts one and three to edge out Arizona for the doubles point.
 
UCLA opened the scoring in singles play, quickly making it 2-0 thanks to a 6-4, 6-0 win by Maxime Cressy over Jonas Maier. 55th-ranked Keegan Smith rallied in a second set tiebreak against Filip Malbasic to make it 3-0 Bruins, and 81st-ranked Evan Zhu held off Aaro Pollanen 7-6(2), 6-3 to seal the match for the Bruins. Igor Karpovets and No. 1 Martin Redlicki were battling in a third set when the match was called. Reguant was up 7-6(9), 5-1 on 87th-ranked Logan Staggs when their match was called.
 
"I thought it was a little better today than it was on Friday," said head coach Clancy Shields. "The guys are gaining more confidence that they can win these matches and I thought we pushed them all the way through. I don't think we handed it to UCLA, I think they had to earn it, and they're number two in the country for a reason. Alejandro was up a set and 5-1 in the second, he's right up there to be a ranked player. The only bummer is we're not giving him the opportunity. We're not staying out long enough to let him get some of those ranked wins. Igor was tight with the number one player in the country. A lot of growth throughout the season, I'm really proud of that. Our doubles team beat the number 11 team in the country. I think we can build off that."
 
The Wildcats close out the regular season against Arizona State in Tempe on Saturday.
