SEATTLE, Washington -- The Washington Huskies defeated the Arizona Wildcats 4-3 in a thrilling Friday night match.
The Huskies made quick work of doubles, which began with Jake Douglas and Mitch Stewart beating
Filip Malbasic and
Carlos Hassey by a score of 6-0. Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer clinched the point for the Huskies with their 6-3 win over
Igor Karpovets and
Aaro Pollanen.
Singles play included five 3-set matches and came down to the very last match. The Huskies took the first two singles matches to put the Wildcats in an early 3-0 hole.
Alejandro Reguant got the Cats on the board with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Amit Batta, and
Trent Botha added to that tally by defeating Alexis Alvarez 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Malbasic evened the score at 3-3 with his 3-set win over Enzo Sommer, but Washington's Jack Davis defeated
Jonas Maier in the last match of the night to clinch the win for the Huskies.
"Congratulations to Washington on the hard-fought battle," said head coach
Clancy Shields. "We positioned ourselves to pull out the victory by winning 6 first-sets in singles. We unfortunately let them back in by losing 6 second-sets. This match will be a great lesson for our team to focus on the process and not get caught up in all the clutter and the score. We will get back up, regroup, and be ready for Oregon on Sunday."
The Wildcats take on No. 41 Oregon on Sunday at 11 a.m. MST. The Ducks are 13-7 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
