WEEKLY NOTES

CATS HOST UCLA, ASU FOR SENIOR WEEK
  • It's senior week for Arizona volleyball (15-15, 5-13), which is set to wrap up the 2019 season this week with a pair of home matches vs. No. 23 UCLA (16-11, 11-7 Pac-12) and Arizona State (16-13, 8-10 Pac-12).
  • The Wildcats have won three of their last four matches after winning just two of their previous 14. Arizona is coming off its first victory over a ranked opponent this season, a four-set win over No. 22 Washington State on Sunday.
  • Prior to the match on Saturday, Arizona will honor its six seniors that will be playing their final matches in McKale Center: Devyn Cross, Shardonee Hayes, Makenna Martin, Julia Patterson, Emi Pua'a and Elizabeth Shelton.
  • It's a short turnaround on Thanksgiving week; the Wildcats will face the Bruins at 2 p.m. MST on Wednesday before taking on the Sun Devils on Saturday at 12 p.m. MST.
  • Last Week: Arizona carried over momentum from its road sweep of the Oregon schools to a split vs. a pair of top-25 teams last week at McKale; the Wildcats fell in four sets to No. 10 Washington before defeating 22nd-ranked Washington State in four sets for its first victory vs. a ranked team this season ... Kamaile Hiapo was once again named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, receiving the award for the second straight week after averaging 5.25 digs/set in the two matches ... Paige Whipple had another big weekend, averaging 5.88 kills/set and had a career-most 29 kills in UA's win over Washington State.
  • What to Watch For This Week: As Arizona enters the final week of the 2019 season, there are many milestones in reach this week for a few different Wildcats: Kamaile Hiapo, who is currently fourth in UA freshman history with 343 digs, is 27 digs shy of the Arizona freshman record for digs in a season (370), Julia Patterson (currently seventh in Arizona history with 3,460 career assists) enters the week 57 assists shy of moving into sixth place in Arizona history in career assists, Devyn Cross (392 career blocks) enters the week eight blocks shy of becoming the eighth player in Arizona history to reach 400 career blocks, Paige Whipple (972 career kills) is 28 kills shy of becoming the 18th player in Arizona history to reach 1,000 kills and just the seventh to do so in her junior year and Dave Rubio enters the week one win shy of 650 for his career.

QUICK HITS
  • Pac-12 Freshman of the Week x 2: Kamaile Hiapo has been named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week each of the last two weeks, becoming the first player in Arizona history to receive two consecutive weekly conference awards. These two awards span two weeks -- the two weeks that Hiapo has returned to her natural position of libero after previously spending time at outside hitter -- in which Arizona is 3-1 and Hiapo has averaged 5.13 digs/set over the four matches.
  • Liberos in the Front Row: As the Wildcats continue in their season-long quest to get healthy, the lineup carousel continues as well; two weeks ago, Makenna Martin, Arizona's libero in 2017 and 2018, made her first start of the season after missing the first 23 matches of her senior season with a back injury; however, due to concussions to three of Arizona's outside hitters/middle blockers, Martin was forced to play front row. 5-9 Martin replaced 5-7 Kamaile Hiapo at outside hitter, who moved back to her natural position of libero, replacing Emi Pua'a, who returned to Arizona's first defensive specialist off the bench.
  • Stat Sheet Stuffer: Julia Patterson, one of two Power 5 conference players to have a triple-double this season (11/3 at Utah) and then finishing one kill shy of her second triple double last week (11/22 vs. Washington), is second in the Pac-12 with 15 double-doubles this season. She led the Pac-12 with 20 of them last year. Twelve of her 15 double-doubles this season have come in Pac-12 play, tied for the most in the league.
  • Patterson is the top attacking setter in the Pac-12, averaging 1.22 kills/set, currently the most kills/set by a UA setter since Dana Burkholder averaged 1.53 kills/set in 2001.
  • Earlier this season at California (10/13), Julia Patterson became the seventh player in Arizona history to record 3,000 career assists, moving into seventh place in Arizona history. She enters this week with 3,460 career assists, 57 shy of sixth in UA history.
  • Trying to Cross .400: Devyn Cross is second in the Pac-12 and is 27th nationally in hitting percentage (.389). Cross is trying to become the third Wildcat in school history, and first since Jill Talbot in 2001, to hit .400 in a season.
  • Concussed Cats: For the second straight season, the Wildcats are dealing with a handful of concussions. Three of UA's top six hitters -- Shardonee Hayes, Whittnee Nihipali and Elizabeth Shelton -- have missed nearly all of Pac-12 season with concussions. In their absence, Arizona has used a pair of liberos -- first Kamaile Hiapo for eight matches and now Makenna Martin -- in the front row.
  • Turning the Paige: Paige Whipple has been surging in recent weeks. The junior outside hitter is averaging 4.83 kills/set over her last seven matches after averaging 3.31/set over the first 21 of the season. Whipple is seventh in the Pac-12, averaging 3.81 kills/set this season.
  • Cut and Dry: The Wildcats are 15-1 when posting a better hitting percentage than their opponents and 0-14 when they are outhit by their opponent. UA is 7-1 when hitting .300 or better and 10-2 when holding its opponents to .200 or worse.
  • The Legend: Head coach Dave Rubio is in his 28th season as the Wildcats' head coach. Last season, Rubio became the second coach in Pac-12 history to surpass 500 victories as a league coach and currently has a career record of 527-336 (.615) at Arizona and ranks 15th among all active coaches in the NCAA with 649 career wins, including his 122 wins at Cal State Bakersfield.

#23 UCLA BRUINS (16-11, 11-7 Pac-12)
  • Team Notes: UCLA returned to the AVCA Top 25 this week after sweeping Oregon (3-2) and Oregon State (3-0) last week in Los Angeles ... The Bruins are led by Mac May, who is third in the Pac-12, averaging 4.67 kills/set and leads the conference, averaging 0.36 aces/set ... UCLA has one of the top offenses in the Pac-12, run by a pair of setters in the 5-2 (Cali Thompson and Devon Chang).
  • Head Coach: Michael Sealy (10th season; 214-101)
  • Series History: UCLA 58, Arizona 27, 1 Tie

ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS (16-13, 8-10 PAC-12)
  • Team Notes: Like Arizona, the Sun Devils also split last weekend at home, defeating #22 Washington State in four and losing to #10 Washington in four, in fact Arizona State and Arizona have mirrored one another's results in the second half of Pac-12 play ... The Sun Devils are in the bottom quarter of the league in nearly every statistical category, but lead the Pac-12 in digs/set (15.83), led by Coutrney Leffel (4.60).
  • Head Coach: Sonja Tomasevic (3rd season; 40-53)
  • Series History: Arizona 52, Arizona State 44
