Arizona Finishes Season at NCAA Tournament

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 29 Arizona played in their first NCAA Tournament match since 2010 on Saturday morning against No. 21 Oklahoma. The Sooners were able to come away with a 4-0 victory, ending a tremendous season by head coach Clancy Shields and the Arizona Wildcats that featured 17 victories, the most since the 2009 season.

"I'm really proud of this team's effort and fight today and this whole season," head coach Clancy Shields said. "We had an opportunity in doubles and we knew that was going to be an important point, but we couldn't convert. In singles play we came out strong, but credit to Oklahoma they beat us on the big points and ran away with the match on a few courts.

"We will miss our senior Jonas Maier. We have been playing this season for him, and his legacy will be a part of this program forever. I'm so happy I got to see him flourish into the young man he is today.

"We are a young team, we return a lot of our guys and graduate only one senior. We have a good recruiting class coming in combined with experience returning, so the future is bright. Getting to the NCAA tournament this year was the goal and moving forward that will be the expectation. I believe the program is in a very good place moving forward."

The doubles point came down to the wire as Oklahoma won on court two and both matches on courts one and two went to a tiebreak. The Sooners were able to win 7-5 on court two while the match on court one was still tied at 6-6, giving Oklahoma the point.

In singles play, Jonas Ziverts and Alejandro Reguant were able to win their first sets, but the Sooners were able to win matches on courts two, five and six to wrap up the match and send them to the Second Round tomorrow.
