TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona basketball's 2019-20 season had its ceremonious unofficial opening on Friday night with the annual Red-Blue game in front of a sold out crowd at McKale Center.
"I can't thank our fans enough," said head coach
Sean Miller, referring to the 14,644 that filled McKale Center for the preseason scrimmage. "It was a magical moment out there. We moved this game up two weeks for the development of our team. But a Friday night in September and we had the same crowd ust like we have the past 10 years, and we can't thank our fans enough."
The night opened as it always does with a pregame scrimmage, with Arizona's Adaptive Athletics wheelchair basketball team holding its own Red-Blue game.
Following the players' grand introductions that included running through pyrotechnic stanchions, five Wildcats --
Devonaire Doutrive,
Josh Green,
Christian Koloko,
Ira Lee andÂ
Zeke Nnaji -- competed in the dunk contest. Doutrive took home the slam dunk title, dunking over 7'0"
Christian Koloko for his first dunk before dunking in an assist from
Nico Mannion off the side of the backboard.
Doutrive's impressive night continued during the game, leading Team Blue to a 46-32 victory. The sophomore posted game-high figures in both points (15) and rebounds (7) while dishing out four assists without a turnover. Doutrive was 6-for-8 from the field, including one of Blue's four threes on the night.
"I just went out there and did what I had to do," said Doutrive. "We played as a team. I just came out there more comfortable. More so than last year."
Stone Gettings was also in double-figures for Team Blue, connecting on both of his 3-point attempts in a 10-point, four-rebound, two-steal effort.
"There's definitely a bit of nerves that go into it," said Gettings, a transfer from Cornell who sat out last year after joining Arizona for the spring semester. "I haven't played a game in a year-and-a-half but you settle in pretty quickly and you realize a basketball game is a basketball game. We are lucky enough to have extremely competitive practices with all of the great guys that we have and it makes it a lot easier to practice how you play."
For the red team, guards
Max Hazzard (11 points),Â
Nico Mannion (9 points) and
Josh Green (7 points) led the way in the loss. Hazzard hit a game-high three 3-pointers, all in the second half for Team Red. Mannion led the red team with three assists in the game.
Arizona will be back in action in November, when the Wildcats host Chico State on Friday, Nov. 1 in an exhibition game in McKale Center. The 2019-20 season will officially kick off on Wednesday, Nov. 6, when Arizona hosts NAU in the season-opener at 7 p.m. MST.Â
