Tucson, Ariz. - No. 28 Arizona made history today after defeating No. 16 Oklahoma for the first time ever. Despite the wild winds, the Cats walked away with a 4-3 win over the Sooners.
The Wildcats took the doubles point after No. 71 Colton Smith and Jared Horwood clinched with a 6-4 victory against No. 29 Mason Beiler and Nathan Han at three doubles. Carlos Hassey and Gustaf Strom finished first at two doubles with a 6-1 win over No. 88 Mark Mandlik and Baptiste Anselmo.
Smith secured the first singles point for the Cats after defeating No. 70 Jordan Hasson in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Nick Lagaev took the second singles point for Arizona after a 7-5, 6-4 win over Welsh Hotard. Lagaev was the only Wildcat to win in two straight sets. Senior captain No. 102 Jonas Ziverts clinched his match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 against No. 29 Mason Beiler to finalize the win for Arizona.
This was a huge win for Arizona after stumbling in Alabama at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic. Arizona remains undefeated at home and is now 13-4 heading into next week's huge match at home against No. 4 Baylor next Friday, March 11 at 2 p.m.
Then the Cats head to California to commence conference play against UCLA on March 18 and USC on March 20.
