SUSAC NAMED GOLDEN SPIKES SEMIFINALST: Sophomore catcher
Daniel Susac, the Arizona Wildcats leading hitter and one of the most prolific bats in the nation, has been selected as one of 31 semifinalists for the 44th Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced on Tuesday. The Golden Spikes Award, now in its 44th year, is awarded annually to the nation's top amateur baseball player. Susac is the sixth Arizona player all-time to earn a spot on the Golden Spikes Award semifinalist list. He is one of just three Pac-12 players to earn the semifinalist distinction this year. At the conclusion of the Wildcats 56-game regular season schedule Susac led the team and ranked fourth in the Pac-12 with a .362 batting average, while his 87 hits paced the conference and ranked tied for eighth nationally. Susac ranks among the Top 10 players in the Pac-12 in hits, doubles, RBI, batting average, total bases, and extra-base hits and has nearly matched or surpassed every offensive mark he set during his remarkable National Co-Freshman of the Year campaign in 2021. Susac has recorded a team-best 29 multi-hit outings and 11 multi-RBI performances this season. Defensively, the Wildcats everyday starting catcher has logged a .985 fielding percentage on a team-high 402 chances and thrown out seven attempted base stealers.
O'TREMBA EARNS ACADEMIC HONORS: Arizona outfielder
Tanner O'Tremba recently earned a selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-District baseball team. O'Tremba was one of five outfielders named to the District 8 First Team and is Arizona's first Academic All-District honoree since pitcher Brad Mills in 2007. The Academic All-District teams, as selected by CoSIDA membership, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. O'Tremba, along with all other First Team honorees, will automatically advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. O'Tremba, who graduated from the University of Arizona this morning with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, proudly sported an incredible 4.0 grade point average and was a member of the 2021 Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll.
PLAYING ONLY THE HITS: Catcher
Daniel Susac and outfielder
Tanner O'Tremba have both been among the most consistent hitters in America this season. Susac's 87 hits lead the conference and rank tied for eighth among all Division I players, while O'Tremba's 81 base knocks are third in the Pac-12 and tied for 31st in the country. Two weekends ago against Oregon State, Susac surpassed his career-best mark of 81 hits, set during his historical freshman campaign in 2021. Both Susac (29) and O'Tremba (23) collect hits in bunches, having combined for 52 multi-hit performances this year. Susac has more multi-hit games (29) than he does zero- or one-hit performances (27).
DOUBLE TROUBLE: The Wildcats defense has excelled at twin killings this season, having turned a conference-best 50 doubles plays in 56 games. In addition to leading the Pac-12 (next: Oregon, 49), Arizona's 50 doubles plays are currently tied for the ninth most among all 293 Division I programs. Shortstop
Nik McClaughry has played a large part in the Wildcats double-play prowess and currently leads the Pac-12 with 170 defensive assists this season. McClaughry played a part in 34-of-50 double plays turned by the Arizona defense this year, the seventh-best individual mark in the Pac-12 and just ahead of teammate and second baseman
Garen Caulfield (33).
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE: With a healthy roster and everyone playing in their natural positions, the Arizona defense has improved as of late. The Wildcats have strung together two extended errorless streaks in recent weeks, the first a five-game coming April 12–18 and the second an eight-game streak from May 1–15. Arizona's recent eight-game error-free streak was the longest recorded by the program as far as game-by-game error records exist (since 1998). Outfielder
Tanner O'Tremba has been a steady defensive hand for the Wildcats, starting 51 games in the outfield and posting a near-perfect .990 fielding percentage on 100 chances. Freshman
Tommy Splaine, who has started 39 games between first base (32 games) and catcher (7 games), has logged a sparkling .991 fielding percentage on 329 chances.
Daniel Susac, Arizona's everyday starting catcher, leads the team with 402 defensive chances this year and has posted a .985 fielding percentage.
EXTRA EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT: Through 56 games, the Arizona offense has combined to swat 192 extra-base hits, the fourth-best mark in the Pac-12. The Wildcats are currently averaging 3.4 extra-base hits per game, with outfielder
Tanner O'Tremba (30), catcher
Daniel Susac (30), and outfielder
Chase Davis (28) leading the way. Arizona has taken advantage of the large dimensions at Hi Corbett Field since moving there in 2012 — in the decade-plus since the move off campus the Wildcats hold the Pac-12 lead with 1,853 extra-base hits (second: Stanford, 1,718). During that stretch Arizona has paced the conference in doubles six times and triples five times.
