TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 9 Arizona Wildcats (11-1, 2-0 Big 12) clinched the championship crown at the Diablo Invite after sweeping rival Arizona State, 4-0, in the title match before overcoming No. 49 Washington, 4-3, in the semis on Saturday, March 1. Arizona improves to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Against the Sun Devils, the Wildcats dominated doubles play on courts one and three. Zoran Ludoski and Filip Gustafsson took down XX, 6-2, on three then No. 63 Jay Friend and Eric Padgham bested XX 6-3 on court one to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Arizona did not let up, taking all three matches in straight sets. Alexander Rozin defeated XX 6-2, 6-1 at five, Friend took care of business, 6-4, 6-2, on court one and Gustafsson had the match-winner on three, taking down XX 6-3, 6-4, to claim the championship for the 'Cats.
In match one of the Diablo Invite, No. 9 Arizona edged No. 49 Washington, 4-3, despite dropping the doubles point. The Wildcats mounted their comeback in singles play, with Alexander Rozin setting the tone on a dominant straight set, 6-2, 6-3, win on court six. The Huskies responded with victories on courts two and three to extend their lead, 3-1.
Arizona delivered with three straight wins after Casper Christensen earned another straight set victory at singles five while No. 8 Jay Friend rallied past No. 57 Cesar Bouchelaghem, 7-6(4), 7-5 at the top spot. The match came down to court four, where Filip Gustafsson defeated Nedim Suko, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-1, to secure the Wildcats' win.
The Cats will be back in action at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center Friday, March 7 for a doubleheader against St. John's and Northern Arizona at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. MST, and again on Sunday, March 9 against Tulsa at noon.
