Arizona vs. San Diego Final Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona women's soccer team dropped their season opener Friday, in a 1-0 decision to San Diego State.

The Wildcats started the first half strong, with a trio of shot attempts in the first four minutes of action. Junior forward Renae Cuellar, who took to the field for the first time since last season's match against Tennessee (Sept. 12), led the Wildcats on shot attempts, with five.

"We were in this for the entire game," head coach Lisa Oyensaid. "We had a great first half; we controlled the ball well, and made opportunities early. In the second half, we started off a little slower, but I think we did a great job of staying focused for the entire ninety minutes, and we defended some of San Diego State's more dangerous opportunities well."

In Arizona's first match as a member of the Pac-12 conference, one freshman, midfielder LeeAndra Smith earned a start, while defender Emily Lai and midfielder Julia Glanzcame in off the bench.

"Unfortunately, it's tough to be in it for the entire game and lose on a penalty kick," Oyen added. "But we kept making opportunities, and especially in those last fifteen minutes. For our first game, I liked what I saw, even if it wasn't the result we hoped for."

In the net, senior Ashley Jettrecorded five saves in ninety minutes, with one goal against, which came off a penalty kick by Aztec Cat Walker in the 68th minute.

Up next, the Wildcats will head up the coast to face Pepperdine on Sunday, August 21 at 1 p.m.
